For many youths this coming fall, they will be starting a new path in their life when they begin college. For most, this means having a home away from home: your dormitory, residence hall, etc. So, if you are living on-campus for the first time, remember these important tips for your first four months in college!

Decorate and reflect yourself!

This is probably the most "enough said" part, but it is very important: have your room reflect you. The appearance of your room will be the most comfortable part about it besides your bed after hours of studying. It is supposed to be a place of security and relaxation after the activities and classes are done. I remember walking into my new college room, feeling tense and anxious since it was blank and empty. But after spicing it up the way I like it, I felt a little more relaxed; it is a space I can call my own--that I did myself. Colors, anime, mementos from home--it was great. My home sickness went away in two days.

Naturally, be mindful about spending, but have fun with it! Look out for great sales, coupons, and deals from your local stores like Walmart, Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond, etc. If decorative pillows and stuffed animals are for you, go for it! If you want your walls plastered with posters of "Doctor Who," "Supernatural," or Marvel heroes, do it!

Keep it clean!

Sometimes we do not feel like cleaning our room; I especially get that since I was horrible at keeping it clean before college. Since you are away from home, you won't have your parents doting on you, clearing the way for responsibility.

As I said before, you have to make yourself at home in your room. Your first year may be tough, so you need to reduce stress as much as possible, and not worry about spending a few hours cleaning your room. The presence of clutter and mess communicates disorganization, and therefore more stress and anxiety.

See something out of place? Then put it back or pick up dirty clothes. Wash your dishes (if applicable), do your laundry regularly, and keep everything neat, and where you can find it. If it's power cleaning, then it will make you active and give you that extra positive energy you need. Think of it as crossing something off your to-do list; it feels good because you accomplished something. And, if you keep it tidy, then it is less maintenance and time for cleaning. Sorry if I sound like a mom!

Besides, doesn't it feel good to just come back from class and kick back without worrying about those misplaced shoes or disheveled stacks of papers and books?

About roommates ...

Chances are that you are going to have a roommate your first year. When it comes to this, understand your needs and your roommates' needs so that you both, or all, can at least cohabitate, especially if there are any medical concerns. I have had three roommates my first year, and everyone's needs and preferences are different. Don't worry! Some colleges/universities match you with a roommate based on certain preferences you give when registering for a room. If you guys get along, then great! You may even become best friends with them! If not, then try to settle things as amicably as possible.

Everyone has different habits, styles, ideas of clean, and ideas, preferences for their room, so take it into your own hands, make your room shine with your own luxury, and have a great first year!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
