My Three Regrets and Victories from High School

We're All In This Together

If there was one obsession I shared with my fellow classmates during elementary school it was our obsession with "High School Musical." We had birthday parties with Zac Efron's face on our plates and napkins and screeched with glee to the sing-a-long versions of the movies. We wept with Gabriella, secretly rooted for Sharpay, and fell in love with every boy who bounced a basketball.

Now imagine our dismay when we arrived into the hallways of high school and no one was singing or dancing with perfectly matched choreography.

High school is not "High School Musical" yet we still go through many of the same problems and accomplishments as our counterparts on screen. Anyone who has been through high school has probably had the same regrets and victories.

Regrets

Drama

When I asked a friend what her biggest regret from high school was her only answer was "subtweeting." We spent hours worrying about what others said and thought about us and spent the same amount of time talking and thinking about other people. It isn't mean, it's just high school. We all regret the notes we passed, rumors we spread, or texts we sent. At least our drama never caused a cafeteria dance party.

Joining Clubs

I'll never regret the clubs I joined only the clubs I didn't get to join. Although it's possible for a jock to be in a musical and a singer to also like science, it isn't easy to do both. In high school, I regret not being able to do more. I wish I could have joined every club, team and after school activity. Unfortunately, I decided to do less instead of more and lived with having fewer experiences and fewer pictures in the yearbook.

Sleep

Because high school began at such an ungodly hour in the morning sleep was always an issue. I wish I could have forced myself to go to sleep when I had the chance instead of suffering with the repercussions here in college. I should have taken the extra twenty minutes in bed and shown up a minute before the bell, but instead, I had to be punctual.

Victories

Football Games

When given the choice, a Friday night football game was the last thing I wanted to go to. Basketball wasn't very high on my list or any sports for that matter. I didn't like watching football games, in fact, I hated it. High school is not the time to do things just because your friends want to. It is your time to fill with things that give you pleasure. I am proud of the fact that I realized this and never forced myself to succumb to those weekly tortures.

Teachers

Some of the best and most influential people we meet in our lives will be our teachers. I was lucky enough to have English and math teachers who poured into my life and gave me the strength and confidence to get survive those four years. Taking time to go in and form these relationships was one of the best things I did and being able to come back and visit them makes it all worthwhile .

Grades

For all that's said about high school, it is only four years of your life. The tests we did and didn't study for don't really matter now. That's why, when it came to the stressful part of school, I never overwhelmed myself. I believe that school is important, but we put too much of our self-worth on a letter and not on what we've actually learned. Grades are necessary, but I never prioritized them before anything important. My report card and my mom can attest to that.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
