As over three billion people tune in throughout the month of August to the exhilarating Olympic games, there is more to bring home than gold medals. Let me channel my inner gymnast (OK I took lessons for one year when I was seven) to offer some cringe-worthy, yet all too true clichés everyone can appreciate from Rio 2016.
1. Mistakes are inevitable. Push through them.
Flaws and faults are a basic fundament to human existence. They're just as probable as successes, only less desirable. Compare your idea of failure to Chinese gymnast Shang Chunsong's slip on the uneven bars. The audible gasps echo the stadium and around the world as this superiorly trained athlete momentarily grasps the bars in her hand, yet drops on all fours to the mat. What does she proceed to do? Immediately rise and continue with her routine, conscious that she has failed many people and most importantly, herself. What a burden to carry. Yet Chunsong has so much more to pride herself on. The fact that she persevered despite the bleak outcome inspires many. Always let your motivation outweigh your mistakes.
2. Transform your obstacles into your advantages.
One member of the Final Five team stands out among her teammates because of her signature move. After injuring a calf muscle during practice, Simone Biles decided to alter part of her routine to incorporate a new, unattempted move to take to the Olympics. Although highly doubted during practices given the difficulty of the trick, Biles managed to achieve a gold medal and create her own signature move. Rather than forfeit that part of the routine altogether, it was morphed into something more powerful and remarkable. Yes, it requires time and dedication but receives a lot more credit in the long run. This is the most applicable lesson when facing day to day actions.
3. The most rewarding success surfaces through teamwork.
Granted, this is one of the most overused phrases of all time, but for good reason. Every team member contributes a more personal, unique aspect. You don't select five girls that are all masters on the beam but inadequate at bars. The most prosperous teams are ones that know what to deliver and how to do so. That has been evident if you've been paying attention to the U.S. Women's Gymnastics, noting the strengths and weaknesses of each young competitor. In the end you are able to share that immense joy and success with those who are equally deserving, making it all the more meaningful.
So if life is dealing you cards that have you falling flat on your face, take a moment to reflect back on these encouragements that give a more authentic perspective to such pressing hardships. Life isn't meant to be easy, it's meant to shape you into a character worth being proud of.
