35 Thoughts Running Through A Girl's Mind At The Gym

Carbs sound really good right now.

The real reason I joined a gym this summer? To avoid having to run outside in New Jersey's humidity. (Seriously: I walk outside and I'm already sweating).

Coming home from college, I also realized that the only way I would keep up my personal fitness goals was if I were in an air-conditioned place around other like-minded people too. And so, I joined a gym and have been going basically every day, mostly due to the fact I signed up for the monthly membership, which is SUPER expensive (and makes me feel guilty if I don’t go). These are 35 thoughts that go through my mind on the daily at the gym. Can you relate?

1. Wow, I’m so proud of myself for coming here.

2. *Starts jogging on the treadmill at 5mph* Okay, this isn't so bad.

3. I'll just run at this speed for half a mile as a warm up.

4. Oo, it's the cute personal trainer again.

5. Why are all the personal trainers so hot here?

6. Is that like a job qualification?

7. I want spaghetti.

8. Like carbs sound really good right now.

9. Okay, running faster.

10. Oo, the elevation’s getting higher too.

11. Ugh, I hate Spotify ads.

12. Why don't I have Premium again? Oh, that's right because I'm a broke college student.

13. I'm gonna learn all the words to "Despacito" this summer.

14. *Sings* Despacitooo. Quiero respir-what?

15. Maybe I’ll skip abs today.

16. I probably shouldn’t though.

17. But I’m so tired already.

18. Wow, I haven’t even run 2 miles yet.

19. Okay, half a mile to go and then I’ll take a break.

20. Seriously, that guy over there is so hot.

21. And that’s what he looks like WITH clothes on.

22. Damn, those arms.

23. I’m so glad I joined a gym this summer.

24. Oh shoot, he's looking this way.

25. Ew, why am I so sweaty?

26. *Wipes face with towel* This towel is disgusting. *Fights the urge to get a new towel midrun because I don't want to be that girl who sweats through two towels when running less than 5 miles*

27. Whew, water break!

28. Maybe I’ll do weights instead of abs afterwards.

29. Is it weird that we live in a culture where people lift heavy things in their free time? Like people in third-world countries don’t do this.

30. Am I the only one who thinks that’s weird?

31. Okay, I’ll jog one more mile and then I'll be done.

32. Should I just sprint the rest so I finish faster? *Increases speed on treadmill*

33. Ugh, this is so tiring.

34. I hate running.

35. Why do I exercise again?

Despite the fact that exercising can be mentally challenging at times, I have no regrets about joining a gym this summer. In addition to working out on my own, my gym membership allows me to take a variety of fitness classes while keeping my mind and body active and energized. Oh, and don't forget the added benefit of being surrounded by fit men. Lots and lots of them. Now excuse me while I muster the courage to talk to that hottie by the bench press.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
