If you've ever been to a public (or private) pool, than you have probably heard the lifeguard discipline, or had to enforce a rule. You might even have been the person the lifeguard had to talk to. As a former lifeguard, and thank God those days are behind me, I noticed some aspects of the job that most people do not quite understand when it comes to what the job really is about. Only a lifeguard will understand the reality of what comes with the job other than sitting in a chair, blowing a whistle, and getting a tan.
Training Sessions
Yes, even after you're hired and have completed your initial certification, you will have to spend some Saturdays and Sundays recertifying or going over rescues. No one even really wants to be there, but at least you get paid.
"Walk"
If I had a dollar for every time I've had to say the word "walk," I would have enough money to pay my college tuition, a house, and a new car.
Flip Flop Tan Lines
Don't be fooled. The sun is hitting us in the weirdest angles, and our feet get the most of it.
Odd Tan Lines In General
Tank top, shorts, one piece bathing suit lines. You know you've seen a lifeguard when they have a mix of dark and light patches.
Trash Sweeps
Yeah, there are no facilities staff that clean up after people. Lifeguards on break have to pick up the trash that patrons leave behind. And when the campers leave! Nightmare!
Code Brown
It is exactly what you think it is. Accidents happen, and we have to shut down the pool to clean it up and add more chemicals to the pool.
Wristband Tests
Giving kids this test determines if they can go down a slide or off the diving board. They have to be strong enough swimmers. When they don't pass, it is like the world has ended and their life is over. Just come back tomorrow and try again.
People Watching
Yes, we are watching for a patron in distress, but we are also looking at the couple in the corner trying to be discrete, the disinterested mom, and the crying baby.
Drownings Never Look Like The Movies
Victims are never splashing and screaming. They're most likely to be bobbing up and down in one spot, or at the bottom of the pool.
We Are Always Paying Attention
We know what's going on all the time. We know you broke a rule. We are paying attention.
