We all know the cliché that out of every friend group there’s always one “fat” girl. I am the one that earned that prestigious title in every group of friends that I have been a part of. At my smallest I was a size 12, at my biggest a size 18, and currently a size 14- and proud of it. By no means do I consider myself, or any girls who sport a double digit pant size as being “fat”, however, we live in a society where plus size models start at a size 6, and high school students that can “pinch an inch” anywhere on their bodies are advised to lose weight. So, I’m here to gladly accept the title of the “fat friend”, and to let you now that anything you can do I can do too- and with less resources and less recognition. So love that cellulite ladies, and accept those rolls, because we only have this body so we might as well love it.
1.Fat Girls “Can’t” Find a Boyfriend
I’ve had a remarkably ordinary romantic life- the first love in high school, the fumble of bad dates and frat party kisses my freshman year, and a series of bad tinder dates while studying abroad. And now I’m dating someone who *gasp* isn’t fat. If you’ve ever been on PornHub you know, that if it exists, someone is attracted to it, and us big girls are no different.
2. Fat Girls "Can't" Wear Anything They Want
We are told through the media that once you hit a certain size the only clothes you are allowed to wear are essentially potato sacks and moo-moos. Let me be the first to tell you that I can work it in anything from a spandex mini skirt to an itty bitty crop top. So wear what you want to wear, no matter the thickness of your thighs or the creases on your stomach.
3. Fat Girls “Can’t” Be Confident
Whenever a fat girl is portrayed on TV, it’s always as the bullied girl who needs to be saved, or the girl who just can’t find happiness until she loses some weight. Contrary to popular belief, in real life our pant size doesn’t consume our every thought, and we too all have different personality traits- including levels of confidence.
4. Fat Girls “Can’t” Be Fit
I’m not going to lie to you guys and claim to be athletic in the least. However, people like Ashley Graham, who use their social media platforms to show curvy girls exercising, are showing that size doesn’t always reflect your fitness level. Tons of athletes are in the “plus size” category, simply because of their muscle mass.
6. Fat Girls “Can’t” Be Popular
Again, it seems a bit egotistical to claim that I was popular in high school, but I will say that I was in the group that ran all of our school clubs, and I was friendly with most of the student body. In college, I am happily in a sorority (one that I’m proud to say is full of all shapes and sizes) and I have a normal group of friends who love me regardless of my body type.
7. Fat Girls “Can’t” Stand to Be Labeled Fat
Words have the power that we give them. Although I can’t say that I’m happy when someone describes me as fat, it’s just an adjective. Why is the term “skinny” always assumed to be a compliment, whereas the word “fat” is assumed to be an insult? So call me whatever you’d like- curvy, voluptuous, fluffy, chunky, thick, or just plain fat. It’s a word that describes me, not one that defines me.
