In honor of their new album, "Holy Ghost," released on May 13, here are 13 things about the indie punk band from Philadelphia.
1. "Modern Baseball Techniques"
2. A pile of dog crap united Jake and Brendan
Brendan had a huge crush on Hannah, the twin of Jake, so he went to see the siblings' band play. He stepped in a pile of dog crap at the show, and Jake offered him an extra pair of sneakers. The two have been best buds since.
3. Initially an acoustic duo
MoBo started off as an acoustic pairing between Jake and Brendan. When away at college, Jake met bassist Ian Farmer. Drummer Sean Huber met them all at a party, and soon after, Ian and Sean were asked to join the duo, turning it into a quartet and Modern Baseball as we now know it.
4. Dual-fronted
Jake and Brendan are both the frontmen of the band, straying away from the norm of having a singular member fronting; they both sing and write songs, which is made extremely apparent in Holy Ghost, where Side A consists of Jake's songs and Side B is made up of Brendan's songs.
5. Their Discography:
The Nameless Ranger, EP (2011)
Sports, LP (2012)
You're Gonna Miss It All, LP (2014)
The Perfect Cast, EP (2015)
Holy Ghost, LP (2016)
6. Jake Ewald's tragic loss
His grandfather on his father's side was a minister, and Jake was at the old MoBo house when he got the call that he was going to die. Jake stepped outside to say his goodbyes and never spoke of it again until "Wedding Singer," a track off of "Holy Ghost." Songwriting gave him the opportunity to say things about his grandfather's death that he couldn't say to his friends.
7. Brendan Lukens' battle with addiction and bipolar disorder
Brendan checked himself into a facility in Maryland after Jake notified Brendan's parents of his manic partying and self-destructive behaviors; he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, behavior disorders, manic depression, alcoholism, high marijuana consumption, cutting behavior, suicidal thoughts, and suicidal tendencies. Since seeking treatment, he has not had a drink or touched a razor.
8. Sean Huber, AKA "Dad"
Being the oldest member of the group, Sean is known as the dad of the bunch. Before the rest were of age, he was always the one buying the beer. His verse in "Your Graduation?" Brendan wrote it, but thought Sean should sing something since he "sounds like a grown man."
9. "Sports" produced at Drexel University
Both Ian and Jake study music engineering at Drexel (set to graduate at the end of this semester), and they were able to record "Sports," Modern Baseball's first LP, over a month's worth of night sessions before class the following mornings.
10. Musical Inspirations
The band as a whole are inspired by The Gaslight Anthem, The Menzingers, Motion City Soundtrack, Say Anything, Brand New and Dashboard Confessional.
11. MoBo Rip Off
How about that time Sorority Noise ripped off the MoBo "Whatever Forever" tee shirt design?
12. Michael Jordan
Although none of the band lives there anymore, the house named "Michael Jordan" was once the headquarters for the band. It was in that three-story brick house that everything began coming together: they slept there, stored gear there, shipped out merch there and partied there.
