Recently, I was perusing the web looking for a solid movie to watch, but mainly just wanted an excuse to be lazy all day. I came across the movie "Soul Surfer" and, of course, had heard about it, but never watched it. I took a chance and needless to say I was NOT disappointed. My range of emotions throughout the whole movie were a roller coaster. Tears one second, anticipating what would happen next and utterly inspired throughout the entire movie.
I'm sure you know, but for those who don't, Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer that survived a shark attack in 2003 which tragically resulted in the loss of one of her arms. "Soul Surfer" was released nearly 10 years after based off this true event that was Bethany's life.
After finishing the movie I couldn't help but want to change my whole outlook on life (and definitely be her friend). She was so badass and a truly inspiring individual. How could someone who went through such hardship possibly come out on top? Looking on some of the events in my life that I have considered hardship, they don't even contest.
Whether you know Bethany personally or just from television, she's definitely taught us a thing or two; appearance isn't everything and to never give up on something you love.
After watching "Soul Surfer" and "The Bethany Hamilton Story" I realized that going back to surfing was not an easy thing for her to do which is pretty understandable. There were times when she was scared and just wanted to give it all up, but the important thing was she didn't. She may have seen herself at a disadvantage, but surfing was her passion and something she was willing to work at to take that disadvantage and be just as great or perhaps even better.
Secondly, she taught us that appearance is not everything we have to offer. Of course at first, getting used to having just one arm was an adjustment, but it was no reason to feel badly about herself or think she wasn't beautiful. There's so much more to a person than just the surface and we are all beautiful in our own ways. Bethany is passionate, inspiring, brave and most importantly BEAUTIFUL on the inside and out. She has an attitude towards life that everyone should strive to obtain.
Moral of the story, I think the world could use a few more like Bethany Hamilton.
