Who in their right mind would have picked the panthers to win the super bowl before the season started? They didn't even look like they were going to win their division. Their leading receiver, Kelvin Benjamin
, was ruled out for the season through injury. And coming off a season where the team limped into the playoffs with a losing record didn't give anyone a reason to even think about the panthers doing anything worth watching this season.
But to everyone's surprise, even my own, the panthers look like a super bowl caliber team this year. Vegasinsider.com gives the team a 5/1
to bring the Lombardi trophy to Charlotte. Those odds are the best in the league. It's actually not that surprising that the panther's are the favorite to win it all. They have the league's third best total defense. And are second best in the league at stopping the run. Defense wins championship but if there is one thing that panther's fans should be boating about it should be the offense. Jonathan Stewart is on his way to to break his career high in rushing. He has been the workhorse this team needed him to be. His best quality while running the ball is his unwillingness to go down. He doesn't have break away speed but he's just fast enough to run past first level defenders, which is what the team needs him to be.Let's not forget that the panther's also have one the best duos in the league. Cam Newton and Greg Olsen have taken this team's offense to the next level. Olsen has moved more from newton's safety blanket to one of the team's most dangerous targets. Much like Stewart, Olsen
is set to pass his career high mark. His impact on this team can not be measured in just yards. He has been the veteran leadership in the locker room this team needed to succeed. Olsen's presence on and off the field has not been appreciated more than by his QB. Unlike Stewart and Olsen, Newton will not pass career high marks. Instead he will lead lead his team to playoffs for the third year in a row. Newton's role this year has been the playmaker when the team needs it the most. Which means that the offense has more dimension to it than just newton running or passing the ball. His role is what the team needs at this point. Newton won't the league's best in yards but he might end up with the league's best record along with an MVP trophy with a super bowl trophy to match it.
