The "This is Me" Writing Challenge
Austin Schultz

At the beginning of January, I began searching through Pinterest for new writing prompts. As part of my own New Year's resolution, I was going to get back into creative journaling. I just needed a little push or shove into the right direction.

I was quite surprised to find how useful Pinterest actually is for writers. I found entire lists of thought provoking and mind triggering prompts! But there was one that would take me on a month long journey into myself.

On my search for journaling prompts, I stumbled across a link that brought me to a blog titled "This is Me Challenge" and I read through it. It was an entire writing challenge centered around personal history and the self. It sounded like one of those time-capsules where you take a shoebox and fill it with little personal artifacts. It is just like that but in writing. I decided to take this challenge.

I began with a fresh, brand new journal and started to write. The challenge has several categories, each with its own in-depth questions. Through this writing exercise, I found myself writing about things I had forgotten about and things that I had ignored for many years. Though an excellent journaling prompt, I found that I had to change many of the challenge's aspects.

The blog was originally geared towards people from "traditional" families with a more Christian background. That is okay. A lot of other people could relate to it, but I know many people (myself included) who could not answer some of the questions. I still wanted to continue with this challenge, just on my own terms. I decided to make my own reimagined version of the "This is Me Challenge". When I finished my edits, I was left with a new, more inclusive personal history prompt.

After a month of this amazing, emotional and exhausting journey, I have completed my own personal history. Considering how I am still a sophomore in college, I know that I will eventually have to add to my personal history.

Young people are always told how they have no life experience or that they have no life story to tell. I believe that we do have experiences and stories to tell. It is never too early to record your life's story. This is a writing challenge that will take a lot longer than your average prompt, but it is worthwhile and worth the time it takes to complete.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
