Living with a person you have no clue about might be an intimidating thing for us coming out of high school. When my mom went to college back in the late 80s, there was no technology, aka a cell phone, to communicate with your roommate beforehand about who was bringing what. Actually there was, except the cell phones were as big as your head and I don't think you could get away with a big ass phone like that in class. I mean you couldn't text on those things. Jut ask Zack Morris from "Saved By the Bell". So I guess today is a little better than that. Having a roommate is one of the first things we are exposed to in our college life that prepares us for the real world. As I go through my undergraduate career and hopefully my law school career, your roommates are a reflection of where you stand in a certain part of your college journey. Allow me to explain in great detail, "The Good, The Funny and The Hilarious" of living with the people you have as roommates while in college.
1. Freshman Year
This is the beginning of the long road for us. The only thing we know about our roommate before we step foot on campus is their name up on Campus Cruiser. The dorm you stay in represents the first group of people you'll be associated with whether it's with a club or similar interests in other areas. My roommate was by the guy of Mike Brant. As it turned out, he lived near my hometown of Hatboro, PA. We both respected each other's interests and got along quite well; Friday nights and weekend is when the whole dorm could let it all out with cracking jokes at each other and Mike didn't shy away from them. Always going to remember freshman year and the group I was a part of.
2. Sophomore Year
The transition year. I lived in Moll this year and was dumbfounded that there are no lights in the dorms. Who's bright idea was that? No pun intended because it wasn't bright at all and I had to buy a lamp for the room. It honestly looked like a prison cell, just bigger. My roommate moved in two weeks into the fall after my previous scheduled roommate was unable to attend the semester. My roommate this year was Andy. I didn't know who he was, but within the first week or so, I got along with him too and I was amazed that I was able to be more socially open when approached with a situation like this. We would always make each other laugh by referencing Chris Farley from SNL, especially "The Herlihy Boy Housesitting Service" sketch. Come on, who doesn't like Chris Farley? I'll always remember the time when he accidentally spilled his ramen noodles all over his bed and they were just out of the microwave. He was about to sit down and he forgot that he placed them on his bed and all of a sudden, i heard through my headphones..."OH SHIT!" There wasn't any paper towels nearby so he went to the bathroom to get paper towels as the ramen lay there on his bed literally steaming and burning his sheets. Sophomore year was an interesting one I must say, but this was also the year I joined Kappa Sigma, and this would lead to my junior year roommates.
3. Junior Year
Junior year. Metro Hall with five of my brothers. Each and every single one had a unique personality, which reminds me of the 1993 Phillies with personalities that we can all relate to. Love these guys to death. Let's go through them shall we?
1. Tyler Vergilio - the cleanest out of the bunch and the hospitality major. Played Xbox with Cucc and loved playing practical jokes whether it was putting saran wrap on the toilet seat or tape in the doorways in hopes we would walk into them or trip over them. Did I forget to mention that he can DJ like a pro?
2. Alex Cucciarre - Suh dude. CJ major and always cracked a joke almost every day, introduced us to the flipagram roasts.
3. Tyler Bentley - Engineering major. The most studious in my opinion. It was like he worked 24/7 and would joke with Ferk about anything.
4. Matt Ferkler aka "The Ferkinator" - Loves watching Netflix, exercising, eating pasta and impersonating Bentley to a point where Bentley would wrestle him. He has also scared me a few times and recorded them on his snap stories. Cucc is guilty of that too. Knows how to work numbers cause of his accounting major.
5. Phil Polselli - Moved in late in the fall semester and he's a guy who cares about Frisbee, dabbing and his socks.
4. Senior Year
As I write this article, my senior year hasn't happened yet. All I know is that I'll be with some of my brothers again from Kappa Sigma and I can say is that senior year is the last year to make a statement.
I can definitely say that my experiences with roommates have been better in regards to communication comparing back to the late 1980s. Your roommate can either be your best friend or maybe not so. It's OK if that's not the case, but if they do become one of your best friends, that's an added bonus. This article is a considered tribute to my roommates. Roommates help guide you in a way that you would never think possible. They're people who you can talk to almost about anything because they might be going through similar times. After all, they're going through college with you.
