The Highs and Lows of Trying to be Healthy in College

Pizza. Gym. Homework. Sleep.

The Freshman 15 is real. The Sophmore 20 is real. College is hard enough balancing maintaining a decent GPA with a social life and professional ambitions, without complicating it by trying to be healthy.

Free. Pizza. Everywhere.

Free pizza, burritos and ice cream? Why buy meals when you can drop by a couple club meetings and get a three course meal for free?

Everyone goes to the gym at the same time

Nothing kills motivation to go to the gym than showing up and seeing everyone and their sorority sister crowding up the only gym on campus. You showed up for arm day, but the only machines free are for legs: the gym gods have spoken. #neverfogetlegday

Post workout highs are what make it worth the effort

The agony of waking up extra early, getting clothes on and dragging your butt to the gym is soon forgotten once the post workout adrenaline and endorphin rush kicks in. Post-workout-you is a million times more productive than Netflix-you.

Going to the gym on a regular basis changes more than just your body

Side effects may include: happiness, increased productivity, better sleep, overuse of #gainz #fitness #onthegrind, increased time checking yourself out in the mirror

Cooking makes you into an adult

Although you probably can live on cheap ramen every day, it’s probably not the best of ideas. Cooking ‘adult meals’ where there’s such a thing as portion control and eating more than one tier of the food pyramid can be tricky at times. And why is it that it take hours to cook a meal, at least a half hour to wash dishes and three seconds to eat a meal? Unfair. Thank the dining hall and your mother for all the years of pampering.

Not every recipe is created equal

Finding a recipe that is healthy and delicious is just a bunch of trial and error. Pinterest can be your best friend and your worst enemy.

Sleep vs. Gym time

Between homework, internships, jobs, classes, and club meetings, sometimes gym time just falls through the cracks and sleep wins. That’s why they call it rest days, right?

Life’s a balance

One day you may live the life of an Instagram fitness model with your perfect healthy picturesque meals and sweat based highlighter game strong and other days you only leave your bed to go to the bathroom and to reheat another Hot Pocket. Just because you fall off the wagon, doesn’t mean give up. Every day is a new day. Find inspiration and make the most of your days!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
