The Cell Phone (Im)Pact

Positive and negative effects of cell phones.

The Cell Phone (Im)Pact

As I sit here on my computer with tabs open on Facebook and Twitter as well as the same apps open on my phone, I find myself wondering, what would my life be without my cell phone or my computer or the internet? Where and who would I be today? Both I and this society that we live in today are constantly, constantly on our phones or laptops. But lately I’ve been thinking a lot: Would I be where I am today if I didn’t have a phone?

Now, I’m not saying that a cell phone and a laptop can have such a big effect on my life and that regular use of these devices has shaped me into someone. I’m saying would I have had the guts to move almost 10 hours away from home, from my parents, from my sisters, from my family if I didn’t have a phone or a way to contact them on the daily?

Technology nowadays happens to have a lot of helpful impact in my life, but also a negative impact.

Obviously, the helpful side effects have given me more strength to pack up and leave home knowing my parents and sisters were just a phone call or FaceTime away, I would still be able to see or hear their voices whenever I wanted. I don’t think I would be able to handle only being able to communicate with letters that take long to get to the receiver.

The bad effect of the world of technology and cell phones is that I have everything right at my fingertips right there: Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram.

Where would my grades be? Maybe I would have doubled up on classes to graduate earlier than I expected. Again, I’m not saying that cell phones have taken over my life, but I would have more free time and way fewer distractions without cell phones and apps.

Lately, I’ve been experimenting by either deleting all my apps or not bringing my phone everywhere I go with me. Just to see how my life focuses better without it. It really is easier to focus and concentrate. It’s astonishing just how much of an impact cell phones and technology can have.

We wouldn't have music right at our fingertips on our phones, we wouldn't be able to call anyone on the go, get to send a quick text message to our family or friends telling them how much we miss them or be able to show everyone our amazing pictures that we can take with our phones.

I encourage everyone to try to go a day or two without their cell phone. Take that day (or two) to see just how your cell phone and technology influences your life. You can see both the positive and negative effects that your phone has on your life.

So where would you be without your cell phone? Would you be where you are today without it?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
