Anyone who knows me knows I’m probably the biggest Colorado Rockies fan ever. Win or lose (mostly lose), I am still at Coors Field rooting them on. The first Colorado Rockies game I watched in full on television was Troy Tulowitzki’s MLB debut, so naturally I was a Tulo fan from day one. I supported him through every pulled hamstring, broken wrist and stitched up hand and cheered extra loud for every acrobatic play and crushed home run. I had Tulowitzki posters lining my room and Tulo jerseys lining my closest.

When the Colorado Rockies traded the face of the franchise in July 2015, naturally I was heartbroken. The gaping hole in my heart convinced me that no shortstop would ever compare to Tulo. Cristhian Adames and Daniel Descalso lacked Tulo’s pizzazz and Jose Reyes was a complete disappointment. But then the new kid on the block, Trevor Story, rolled up with his hot bat, crazy potential and killer good looks — I mean, am I the only one that thinks he’s Ryan Gosling’s twin brother?

From August 2006 to July 2015, Tulowitzki was the Colorado Rockies’ Gold Glove shortstop, Silver Slugger hitter, MVP finalist and face of the franchise. Tulowitzki was a defensive beast in Denver, only committing 74 errors in his 1,033 games with the Colorado Rockies. And, throughout those 1,000-plus games in Colorado, he hit 188 home runs.

Even with his introverted personality, he became a fan favorite. Every Rockies fan wore a two on their back and clapped and yelled the Tulo chant when he batted at Coors Field. Very quickly, it became obvious that Tulowitzki was special. Anyone with eyes and a little baseball knowledge could see that this giant shortstop was arguably one of the best to ever play the position and the best present day shortstop.

But then, the unexpected happen, Jeff Bridich, the Rockies GM, traded Tulowitzki to the Toronto Blue Jays. The baseball world exploded and Colorado Rockies fans were crushed. But just like life, baseball moves on, but no Rockies player played short like Tulo -- that is until April 2016 when Story came onto the scene.

Story, the Rockies rookie shortstop, stole the position and all baseball fans hearts by cranking out two home runs on his MLB debut against All-Star pitcher Zack Greinke. With each home run and clutch hit, Story stole all Rockies fans hearts and erased all memories of Tulowitzki.

Story’s hot start raises the question if the Colorado Rockies really miss Tulowitzki. Yes, he was the face of the franchise for the better part of nine years, but he was a rude player who could not find a way to stay healthy and remain on the field. It is hard to compare Tulowitzki and Story. One’s a vet who has years and thousands of at -bats under his belt, and one is a streaking rookie with overarching potential.

Since it is unfair to compare career stats between a 10-year veteran and a bright-eyed rookie, I will compare Tulowitzki’s and Story’s first two months and this year’s stats, along with what my eye tells me. So much of talent and true baseball skill and baseball IQ comes from actually watching a player play. Stats never tell the full story.

While not his “rookie year," Tulowitzki made his MLB debut Aug. 30, 2006, for the Colorado Rockies, playing the rest of season as the starting shortstop. In 25 games, Tulo had 96 official at-bats, 23 hits, one lonely home run, 25 strikeouts and two errors. Tulowitzki was also batting for a team out of playoff contention, so teams naturally were not throwing Tulo the nasty pitches, making it much easier to hit and not strikeout.

Through Story’s first 27 games in the MLB, he has made a much bigger impact. So far this season, Story has 122 official at-bats along with 30 hits, 11 home runs, 43 strikeouts and three errors. Yes, he does have a very high amount of strikeouts, but he does get to a large amount of 3-2 counts, meaning he works counts and sees a lot of pitches. Besides the large amount of strikeouts, Story’s stats are much more impressive than the young Tulowitzki’s, and he is doing it on a .500 team.

A more telling comparison is the differences in their stats so far this season. Tulowitzki, allegedly in his prime right now playing in Toronto, has batted .163 with five home runs and 13 RBI’s. For you non-baseball fans, that is terrible. Like, it’s horrifically bad. Story, the new kid on the block, so far has batted .268 with 11 home runs and 24 RBI’s. Story’s batting average is 105 points better, he has more than double the number of home runs and 11 more RBIs. Even the most uneducated baseball fan can see that Story is way better than Tulowitzki.

Tulowitzki is one of the greats and he is arguably one of the best Rockies of all time. As a Rockies die-hard fan, it was extremely hard watching Tulo wearing blue and playing for a different team. Tulowitzki left the Rockies leaving giant shoes to fill, but luckily Story has some pretty big feet.
