Dear Greek life,
Two words: Thank you.
My story seems similar to young women all over the country. Before I came to college, I did not really imagine myself in a sorority. I did not know much about Greek life, besides what I'd seen in movies, or from pictures girls I'd gone to high school with had taken with their new sisters. (To be quite honest, I really thought that sisters referred to biological siblings and was impressed at how many women and their actual sisters were in the same sorority).
I made the choice to go through recruitment anyway. I thought I might as well take the chance instead of wondering my whole life what could have been. The recruitment experience did not go as I thought it would or should, but long story short, I found a home in Delta Phi Epsilon.
Thank you for bringing these wonderful ladies into my life at a time I needed it most. It seems cliché and perhaps odd to refer to joining a group of young women as finding one's home, but it's true. These women are my sisters, my other family, my home away from home. I've met some of the best friends who will eventually become my bridesmaids. My sisters are a support system and tight knit family that builds each other up, as well as working on building up others.
Thank you for helping me help others. I never really considered myself a charitable person, but now I can't imagine philanthropies not being a major part of my life. My chapter alone has raised thousands of dollars for our philanthropies, dedicated a multitude of hours of service work, and so much more to helping others. It warms my heart so much to do good for others alongside my sisters!
Thank you for opening up doors I never thought I could open for myself. I have been pushed to work harder in school, which has opened up academic opportunities. Striving to become a leader, I gained a small, yet necessary position within my chapter. This has led to other positions around campus being available for me, and helped me become a stronger leader. Thank you for allowing me to become a part of something bigger than myself and pushing me to be the best I could be.
Thank you for introducing me to other Greeks. Some of my best friends are in other sororities, but no matter the letters, we are all sisters together. I am lucky to go to a school where the Greek community comes together and supports each other constantly, through service events, philanthropy dinners, campus-wide events, and so much more. Everyone is proud of their work and the work that others do.
Overall, thank you Greek life, for helping me become a better person.
Xoxo,
Emily (aka a proud DPhiE sister)
