There are so many different stereotypes about being in a Greek organization.
Members party too hard or cheat on exams. Everyone in Greek life is rich or snobby. But I'm here to tell you that everyone in Greek life is not like that.
There are all types of people in Greek organizations that I would have never met if I hadn't rushed. I am so grateful for my organization and all the beautiful people and opportunities it has given me.
I never wanted to be in a sorority. I thought that they were just places where rich girls bought their friends and did a weird pose in pictures.
However, as life would have it, I rushed my junior year of college in what was the most invigorating, exciting, exhausting and rewarding experience of my life. My life had taken some rough turns and I knew that I needed some kind of purpose to work towards, so one of my very close guy friends told me to get involved with formal recruitment.
The conversation ended with him sending me an email with all the recruitment info and the title "JUST DO IT."
So, the day before formal recruitment sign-ups ended, I added my name to that list. I was so nervous and so embarrassed, thinking that my family and friends wouldn't approve. So I only told my close friends and my parents about my decision.
Formal recruitment was a whirlwind of excitement and emotions that I had never experienced before.
The way that these women spoke about their organizations literally gave me chills. Because I was still unsure about the whole process, I took the time to think it over each night and took no one's opinion but my own.
I also talked to my recruitment counselor who assured me that I would find my forever home. So when preference round came along I was still nervous and a little unsure about what I would do.
I ended up getting a bid from my number one choice and got the privilege of running into my preference sister's arms, and after that I was so lost for words.
Although I was still unsure about being in a sorority, I was grateful that these wonderful women had voted for me to be in their organization and to be a part of their sisterhood.
It took me awhile to warm up to my all of the sudden newly found "sisters" but once I found out what sisterhood really meant, I was all in. Sisterhood means going to pick someone up from a party at 2 a.m. to make sure they stay safe.
It means FaceTiming with sisters who only want to cheer you up. It means leaning on people that you have literally just met and finding out that these people already know you so much better than you know yourself.
It also means that you have someone to borrow a hair tie from in the library when you are vigorously pushing your hair out of your face while writing a paper.
Sisterhood means so many things to me, and I have so much love for all of these women that I have known for only a semester. But the thing that surprises me most is that I was ever unsure at all about joining Greek life because I don't know where I'd be now without them.
I am so happy that I am, and so grateful for all the opportunities that Greek life has given me.
