On Monday, October 10, Samford Football was ranked No. 24 in both the FCS Coaches Poll and the STATS FCS Poll. This is the first time Samford has made the top 25 on one of the official polls since 2013.
After the away game against Furman, bulldog quarterback and sophomore, Devlin Hodges, claimed his second straight SoCon Offensive Player of the Week with three passing touchdowns, 28 completions and 411 passing yards. This past weekend when Samford beat VMI 55-21, Hodges tied a career high with five touchdown passes.
So far this season Samford Football is 5-1. This includes two SOCON wins against Wofford and Furman and a non conference win on the the road against Central Arkansas.
Samford is one of only three other SoCon schools to be in the polls this week. Chattanooga, Samford’s only loss this year, is ranked fifth in the STATS poll and Citadel, who Samford will be playing Nov. 5, is ranked eighth in the STATS Poll.
Samford Football beat VMI this past weekend. Having a big win and remaining in the polls wasn’t the only exciting thing to happen at Seibert Stadium.
Linebacker Deion Pierre, number 44, proposed to his girlfriend, Jasmine Henderson, after the game. With Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud playing in the background, Pierre’s teammates danced around Hendersen with roses until Pierre got down on one knee. Without a doubt, Henderson said yes.
When comparing teams, Samford head coach, Chris Hatcher mentioned that there were predictable similarities in the match up. "Offensively, they like to throw the ball around, similar to what we do. Defensively, they bring a lot of pressure that we have to be ready to pick up," he said "We're expecting a very tough battle and we must continue to improve."
Senior offensive lineman, Gordon Crozier, was excited about the win and the rankings. "It's definitely a big deal." he said "Like Coach said, you can't be number one unless you're in the top 25. Right now, it's all about keep winning every single week and hopefully the rest of it takes care of itself."
Samford and the bulldogs look forward to a great season ahead.
