Growing up, I was shy. I didn’t raise my hand in class, nor did I change my hairstyle, afraid I would draw attention to myself. Even during spirit weeks, my “Wacky Wednesday” outfits weren’t exactly wacky. By the time I reached high school, I became a little more outgoing, but I still made sure not to stand out.
It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I decided to do something my awkward fourth grade self would have passed out over. I participated in my school’s Senior Oratorical, speaking in front of only 700 freshmen, seniors, teachers, parents, and three distinguished judges. The speech could be about anything, as long as it had an important message that could be of some significance to both the freshmen and seniors.
So, I spoke about my battle with Epilepsy, and the amazing role models I found through volunteering with local support groups and organizations for the cause. My message encouraged my audience that they can do anything they wish and that a disability shouldn’t ever hold them back from that. While I spoke, I realized that I was completely stepping out of my comfort zone and I enjoyed my time at the podium, located in the very center of the packed gymnasium. The speech was one of the most terrifying and incredible experiences I’ve had, and I encourage others to do things they don’t think they can accomplish.
Give a speech, take a leadership role in a club or class, join a sport you’ve never actually played in your life. Even if it’s trying a food you’ve never had, you are stepping outside of your comfort zone, which not only makes you more confident, but allows you to find your interests and passions.
When I was asked to write for Odyssey, I had to think about it a little. What if people dislike my writing, or will I have time to keep up with the deadlines? Writing articles for the public is something I’ve never done before. But if I don’t try it out, I’ll never know if I like it. So I accepted the offer and I am enjoying the challenge so far.
So before 2016 ends, take a risk and try something you never thought you’d try.
I hope you enjoy it.
