There are so many problems with contacts or glasses that make you wonder why can't you just have perfect vision. Here are a few.
1. Running out of contacts
Ah, the problem that inspired this article. Like the awesome patient I am, I heeded my eye doctor’s directions to change my contacts every month. So, I threw out my old pair one night only to find out the next morning that I have no more contacts. I was forced to wear my nerdy, huge glasses for the next two weeks until my new contacts arrived.
Also, this is extremely inconvenient when you’re on vacation or hiking, etc.
2. Losing your glasses
Your mom always yells at you for leaving them around the house – countertop, dining table, the couch even, and you always tell her you’ll move them, but you forget where you left them. And now you’re stuck because you can’t even see where they could be. Oh, the irony.
3. How many fingers am I holding up?!
I used to hate this when I was a kid. Before I started wearing contacts, I wore my glasses only when necessary in school (to see the board, etc.) and when I would take them off, there was always that one kid who’d squeal, “How many fingers am I holding up?!” The kid was sitting next to me and I don’t understand how a fourth grader couldn’t understand that I could obviously tell with him so close. Smh.
4. Putting contacts on inside-out
This hurts like H-E-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS. That’s all there is to say.
5. Getting contacts stuck in your eye
I’ve got two horror stories for you.
First… When I first got contacts and I was trying different trial pairs, there was one day in school I rubbed my eye. When I opened my eyes again, my contact in my right eye had moved. It went to the back of my eyeball, and as a new contact-wearer, I was TERRIFIED. I went to the bathroom, and after five minutes of harsh rubbing, I started to cry – only then did my contact come out.
My second horror story…
I was away at summer camp when I was 13, and I put my contacts on in my room with my little portable mirror. I realized I put one on inside out and when I went to take it out, it ripped. IN. MY EYE. I could see the other piece STILL IN MY EYE, but it was too small and I couldn’t get it out. After about a half hour of trying, I gave up and put another contact in. I was lucky that when I took it out later that day, the broken piece came out with it.
6. Dry contacts in the winter
Another reason I detest winter. The constant dry heating blowing through the vents and the cold air outside can really ruin your day. Sophomore year of high school, when I ran winter track, there were two days I got so frustrated that I just took my contacts out, threw them away, and ran outside half-blind.
7. Glasses sweat in the summer
Two words: ears & nose.
8. Swimming struggles
Every time I encounter this hassle on vacation, I consider Lasik eye surgery. There is something about the convoluted process of making sure you pack your contacts case with solution to your snorkel trip, wearing your contacts to the beach, taking them out with the reflection on your phone screen before putting on your goggles, observing slightly blurry fish, and putting them back in later that makes me want to find the closest surgeon for the procedure and get it done.
