Struggles People Who Are Always Awake Understand

It's hard being a night owl.

There are so many things to do than sleep. Stay up on tumblr, or wake up early to study. Either way, being up before anyone else can be bliss, especially if you live with someone and want some peace and quiet time by yourself. Yet, it can also be inconvenient to live with someone who has regular sleeping habits. Whether you are an early riser or a late night lurker, there are certain problems we all know too well.

1. You have to be noise conscience.

I’m sure we all know the struggle of trying to be quiet when we get our midnight snack. Somehow, despite all of your efforts, you end up dropping your fork or clinging tableware too loud. Even though you find it the perfect time to play video games, everyone else in the house found it to be a good time to sleep. Remembering to put things on mute and wear head phones during your morning rock out session are things we deal with on a daily basis. You don't mean to, but you find that you are disturbing others.

2. People ask you why you’re always up.

You know that awkward moment when you’re getting food at night, and your parents come in asking what you’re doing? You do if you're someone who's always awake. If someone has asked you, "Why are you up so early?" and the only thought you could come up with it, "Why isn't everyone up this early?" then you understand the bittersweet taste of not having to sleep a lot. Always getting nagged to go to bed or morning duties of taking out the trash is put on you, besides all problems we all have dealt with. But it's always nice to be able to make breakfast just for yourself, because no one else is up yet.

3. You have no one else to talk to.

See a funny meme on Odyssey? Have to wait till morning to show your friends. Feeling bored and want to go out? Can’t, the stores are closed. Or want to talk to a friend, but remember the rest of the world is still sleeping. All problems of being awake at weird times equate to one: being alone. As fun as it can be to have this quiet time, it can get boring without someone to share the tumblr gifs with.

4. Getting caught red handed.

Does anyone else get really embarrassed when they are caught doing something late at night. If you are a night owl who doesn’t live alone, you have probably been caught with your head in the fridge or cooking something even though it is 11:45 p.m. Better yet, someone disturbs the imaginary music video you were shooting in your mind. The worse of all might be you sibling catching you taking selfies, because you woke up like this, and now your siblings won’t let you live it down.

5. Feeling over-emotional.

It is a proven fact that people are more emotional when tired. This is not really a problem if you are sleeping, but if after a long night of YouTube, you have to get up. You know the annoyance and agitation you feel from everything. Other people might not understand why you are so cranky, and that will just irritate you more. The little things become big things, and it might take more than your usual cup of coffee to get out of the rut.

Being awake all the time can be tough, but worth it for those extra hours of peace and serenity.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
