When someone mentions the word "Pittsburgh," one of the first words of association to come to mind is probably "sports" or one of the team names. That's because the sports teams here have had so much success, both on and off the respective playing fields. Check out the list of each team below to see why they're so wonderful!
1. The Penguins
I'm going to start off with my personal favorite team, because I'm sure you've heard that they've recently been crowned Stanley Cup champions for the fourth time in franchise history! They won their first Stanley Cup in 1991, and also won it in 1992, 2009, and now, 2016. Hockey is such a fast-paced and action-packed sport, and fortunately, we have such a nice venue, CONSOL Energy Center, to watch live games in. Numerous players, such as Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury, are involved in volunteer and charity events, and the players are all around just great people. Sadly, though, we have to wait until October for the next season, but for now, let's just keep celebrating the Stanley Cup win.
2. The Steelers
With a stadium named after the founder of the best ketchup in the world, the Steelers have to be good! Heinz Field is located right next to a river, which can cause it to be a bit chilly at games during the fall and winter months. They've been around as a team since 1933, and to this day have six SuperBowl championships under their belts. Since 1971, the defense has been nicknamed "the Steel Curtain," a play on the Iron Curtain, so you can guess how good they are. Players such as Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, and Jack Lambert are members of the NFL Hall of Fame, and I'm sure that current players will be in the future.
3. The Pirates
Summer's here, so it's baseball season! The stadium is also located near a river and provides a breathtaking view of the city. A few times in the summer, there are firework shows after the games, provided by Zambelli Fireworks. The food at the games is also quality, and who could forget about the pierogi races? After the end of the fifth inning of each game, people dress up in giant pierogi costumes and race around the stadium. Some of the best players in the league's history, such as Roberto Clemente and Bill Mazeroski, have been a part of Pirates' history. Buy some tickets, grab some friends, and get to PNC Park for a game before summer's over!
4. The Passion
The Passion are a quite successful team, and are often overlooked by many sports fans in Pittsburgh. The women's full-contact football franchise began in 2002 and is currently owned by Teresa Conn and Franco Harris. They've won numerous Divisional Championships and one National Championship. If you ever want to see a game, their home stadium is George K. Cupples Stadium, located in the South Side of Pittsburgh. In addition to their wins, they're the first women's football team to be featured on ESPN, in Sports Illustrated, and to be broadcasted on well-known networks of live television.
The sports teams of Pittsburgh have fans nationwide, and even all across the world, too. People everywhere don the black and gold colors of our beloved city to show their support of the teams. If you want more information on the sports teams and their histories, try to visit the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum at the Heinz History Center next time you're downtown!
