It's summer time, so basically now is the time to start being healthy, watch what you eat, take care of your body, get up and get active and obviously have fun. It's easier said than done. Substituting that ice cream cone for a salad and taking your legs walking instead of your car for a drive is a bit of a change, but it is doable and attainable. It will definitely be that much more worth it when you reflect back on how your eating habits, exercise habits and lifestyle habits have changed for the better. There are so many different aspects to beginning your newly discovered healthy lifestyle and it can seem a bit overwhelming or daunting at first, but once you see those pounds that have been shed and you feel that level of energy that you never had before, it will all be worth it. I'm here to help assist you in starting your journey towards becoming a healthier, active participant in life and I have just the tips and tricks to help you make this small, yet noticeable transformation.
1. Walk or Bike Instead of Driving.
Instead of driving those few blocks or getting someone to pick you up from your nighttime class, use the legs that were given to you to cycle, jog or walk from place to place. It will keep you in shape, active, and you may discover new paths or beautiful scenery that you wouldn't have otherwise.
2. Take Up a Hobby That Involves Some Form of Exercise.
Don't get me wrong: I love to have Netflix marathons, but doing it every day is unhealthy and unproductive. Instead, substitute a spinning class or kickboxing class once or twice a week instead of finishing the latest season of "Grey's Anatomy." It will still be there when your spinning class is over.
3. Choose To Eat at Home.
McDonald's fries are most definitely heavenly, but they are something that should be consumed on special occasions. By eating at home and cooking semi-healthy meals such as chicken and rice, salmon and salad, etc. you will be saving money, time and carbohydrates.
4. Incorporate Healthier Food Into Your Diet.
A milkshake and a burger is very tempting, but save it for once a month and substitute that burger with a nice salad, healthy soup or even some fruit and vegetables. You will notice the difference in your energy level, how interactive you are and your body will feel the positive change too. It's as simple as choosing chicken over steak for your burrito bowl at Chipotle or ordering that salad instead of the cheesy pizza.
5. Get out and Enjoy Life.
This summer you will be traveling, experiencing new people, places, cuisines and cultures and it will all involve some form of being active. Say yes to hiking up that mountain, to kayaking that river, to swimming those laps. Say yes to trying that new salad, walking through that bazaar or simply just walking across campus.
With that being said, choosing to live a healthy lifestyle is not as difficult as it seems. It starts with a decision and small steps to follow. It is a choice that you will not regret and that will noticeable in every area of your life. Sure, it takes a little bit of extra work, but what doesn't take some effort that is worth pursuing in life?
