As human beings, sleep is necessary. I have come to learn this is more and truer as my collegiate career continues. Without sleep, we cannot function from day to day. Simple tasks like making breakfast become a challenge because our senses are impaired. Sleep is even more important as a student-athlete. Without sleep, I cannot do what I need to do in class, much less at practice. So every now and then it is okay to skip that 9:00 AM class and sleep an extra hour. The world will not end, and your body and mind will thank you. Here are the 12 stages of sleep deprivation as told by the cast of "Friends".
1. Denial
Everyone believes, or hopes, he or she is invincible. That is why we brush off the initial signs of lack of sleep because sleep is for the weak.
2. Rubbing your eyes
Okay, so I am starting to feel it now. Maybe, I am not so invincible after all. But if I rub my eyes hard enough the drowsiness will go away, right?
3. Laughing at everything
Alright, I guess I am a little tired. But who could sleep when everything is so funny?
4. Shameless dancing
Sleep or dance party? It's really no contest.
5. Over-excitement
Woah, life is great! I've been awake for over 20 hours, and I am still going strong! Give me a gold medal! I am a superhero! Life is awesome!
6. Weird sh*t
Life is horrible because I dropped my pencil on the ground and I have to bend a whole three feet down to pick it up, ugh!
7. Desperation
I am determined to do anything and everything to stay awake.
8. Cuddles
I want cuddles with my friends, with my family, with my pets. I want all the cuddles!
9. Sheer force of will
All right. I admit it. I am not invincible. I am exhausted.
10. The crash
This couch looks comfortable. I will just lie down and close my eyes for about three days.
