You know when you hear a song and you say to yourself “I hate this gosh dang song?” For some people, in this case, Minnesota sports fans, there are songs that, when played, usually mean heartbreak. These are the songs that inflict the most pain on Minnesota Sports fans.
1. Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis
I don’t know if it’s the loud horn that plays before it or seeing 19,000 Chicagoans happy that causes the pain, but I do know that the song "Chelsea Dagger" has something to do with it. “Chelsea Dagger” became the Chicago Blackhawks' goal song in 2008 and has been playing in Chicago’s United Center ever since. This song should be called the “Theme Song of May for MN sports fans.” It all starts with hope; the Wild are playing right with the mighty Blackhawks, who have won three of the last six Stanley Cups. Then the likes of Patrick Kane or Jonathon Toews gets control of the puck and sends it up to Bryan Bickell (only under contract when they play Wild?) who puts it past one of the many Wild goalies gone through since they started the yearly playoff series in 2013. All hope is lost for Minnesota Sports Fan, and then the final “dagger” hits with the blasting of Chelsea Dagger.
2. New York, New York by Frank Sinatra
Now that we have established Chelsea Dagger as the theme song of May, it’s time we award “New York, New York” the MN sports fan “Theme song of October.” The New York Yankees adopted Sinatra’s song in July of 1980 as the song they would play after every win. Mark Teixeira ends Game Two of the 2009 ALDS: New York, New York. The 27th World Series title is captured: New York, New York. Frank Sinatra’s song has now made its way to every game, no matter if the Bronx Bombers lose or win. In my opinion, if the Twins make their way to Yankee Stadium, it’s never a good time.
3. Bang The Drum All Day by Todd Rundgren
“Rodgers takes the snap, looks over the field, throws it to Jordy Nelson, who runs by Xavier Rhodes for the touchdown!” Then it plays. “I don’t want to work…”
The mixture of a bunch of people wearing a cheese on their head and the Lambeau leap with “I want to bang that drum all day” is enough to make a Vikings fan want to throw up. The song started echoing throughout Green Bay in 1985, and let’s say the Packers have gotten a little better than that 8-8 team. Two rings and only four quarterbacks later, the Packers are still banging that drum all (Sun)day.
Hey, maybe this is all short-term, some Blackhawk fan may write this same article about how Chicagoans can’t listen to “Crowd Chant” without grimacing. A Yankee fan someday will be typing away on how painful it is to hear “Beautiful Day,” Who knows, maybe Carl Gerbschmidt, an avid Green Bay Packer fan who evened opened up a Ice Bowl exhibit to commemorate a football game that happened in 1967, will start ranting about how “Skol Vikings” is driving him nuts, because it reminds him of the clobbering of his Packers. Time to dream big, Minnesota sports fans.
