Happiness is the feeling and emotion that all humans desire throughout their existence. The tricky thing about happiness is that it is not easily explained. Some people may believe that their happiness stems from getting straight A's, landing the perfect job, marrying the love of their live, having a big house and having a wallet full of cash... Other people find happiness in donating their time to others, exploring nature, relaxing with friends or listening to some great music. The true way to obtain your utmost happiness varies based on the individual. Personally, I believe true happiness lies within balance of personal care for the body, mind and soul.
From a very young age, we are taught and encouraged to eat vegetables, drink milk, exercise, and get a good night’s sleep. These are some ways to take care of the body and mind. In today’s society, taking care of your body and mind is a prevalent lesson and topic of discussion. But what about caring for your soul? Growing up in a Catholic household, the only time I can recall hearing about the soul is when it was discussed in regards to death. The unfortunate truth about our physical bodies is that they are only expected to last for around 80 years. However, I believe our unseen souls are everlasting. Our physical bodies may expire, but our souls are eternally at peace.
The truth and reality of life was wisely stated by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu. He explained: “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” The message behind this is that situations arise, and events happen that we deem unfortunate. Relationships fall apart, loved ones pass away and we do not always succeed in the things we try. But these changes are not meant to be resisted or fought. They are meant to be learned from.
To be honest, life is full of simplicity. The reason it appears to be so complicated is due to the way our minds perceive the aspects of ordinary life. These are everyday situations, wants, needs and stresses each person experiences in a day. These different stressors are all distractions…distractions that are getting in the way of your much-deserved happiness.
While it is so very easy to get caught up in the beautiful mess we refer to as life, it is important to remember to care for your soul just as much as your body and mind. Don't get too caught up in life. You could miss out on the other things life has to offer, if you are too caught up on the small stuff. The simplest way to do so is to make happiness a priority. Yes, life’s daily responsibilities are always our first priority. But don't ignore your responsibility you have to reassure your own happiness. Do not put they key to your happiness in anybody else's pocket. Call a loved one, go for a walk in nature, watch your favorite movie, dance in the rain, admire the sunset, lay on the floor with your dog and be sure to laugh… you are never too busy to be happy. Time never stops and neither should you. Happiness is possible for you and me -- every single day.
