I've been jamming to Daya's "Sit Still, Look Pretty" for a while because it's basically my theme song. Or was. After listening to it one too many times while stuck in traffic on my way home for Thanksgiving, I realized that it's not 100% right.
Yes, there are a probably more girls now than ever that have decided to be #girlbosses rather than some guy's trophy wife. I enjoy working and want to be able to provide for my family as much my husband will. It takes two to make a thing go right, all that good stuff. At the age of 20, I'm a licensed insurance agent who has worked for State Farm for over 3 years, I am an Editor-in-Chief for Odyssey, and am a full-time student. I like working. It gives me things to accomplish without pulling my hair out.
But does that mean I won't ever just sit still and look pretty? No. Most of the time, I will be in jeans and a t-shirt with a ball cap on. That doesn't mean I don't like getting dressed up. Most girls do. And I realize that there are times to just sit and look pretty. After all, it's what certain grandmothers have been teaching us to do since we could sit up by ourselves.
When family starts talking politics and you know that if you speak, World War III will commence over the green bean casserole, it's probably best to just sit there and look pretty. Arguing with Uncle Pickle that no, not everyone in my generation is addicted to crack cocaine, is a waste of your breath. So just sit and look pretty (or as pretty as you can while stuffing another biscuit in your mouth).
When at a significant other's office Christmas party and the boss starts talking about his favorite football team, who you know is absolutely terrible. You should probably just sit still and look pretty. His QB may play worse than Betty White, but it's probably not a good idea to tell him that. I'm still working on this one.
When your grandmother tells you for the millionth time to "sit like a lady" after you cross your legs at the knee instead of at the ankle. You can think about throwing a roll at her, but it's probably best to just sit still and look pretty.
When the notorious town gossip asks you how you're doing, sit still and look pretty. You're even welcome to throw in a "God is good," if you are so inclined. He is good all the time, and my life is going wonderfully. Thank you for your concern.
When your co-worker complains about how much work they have to do, yet they still find time to go out, gossip, or spend time watching Netflix instead of doing work, just sit still and look pretty.
The bottom line is, you don't have to just be a #girlboss or know how to sit still and look pretty. You can have a balance of both, and that's okay, too. You do you, however you choose.
