We Are Sisters By Chance And Best Friends By Choice
Caroline Hernandez

Being the first born child, my parents hold my sister and I to different standards. They love us both equally, give us the same luxuries, and make sure we are the best versions of ourselves. As the older sibling I am the one who has more responsibilities more with my parents because I am suppose to be the best role model for my sister. My mom always tells me that my sister is supposed to look up to me and make sure she knows I'm watching out for her. Funny part is, I look up to her. Even though my sister and I are sisters, we couldn't be more different personality-wise. I admire that about our relationship. We seem to view life differently and it makes us better in the areas we are lacking in.

I admire my younger sister so much. She is kind, she is loyal, she does not judge, and she has the biggest heart. My sister sees the world so pure and genuine and that is something I need to work on. She is carefree and I am uptight. She is sensitive when I am tough. We are polar opposites, but we get each other so well. Having a built-in best friend, as you can say, is what having a sibling is like. You might have petty fights and get annoyed at one another, but at the end of the day you are family.

Being in college and away from my sister is very hard for me. She knows everything about me and gives me the best advice. When I'm sad she knows how to cheer me up and when she needs a ride I am the first person she calls. Watching her grow into the young woman she is today is the greatest pleasure. Helping her with problems I went through as a sixteen year old keeps me young. The bond and relationship my sister and I have is lifetime. The fact I was blessed to have someone who strengthens my weaknesses everyday is truly a gift. So, if you have a brother or sister or even if you are an only child with a best friend who is like family, cherish those relationships and make them the best. At the end of the day, you are family and you are keeping your family's legacies alive. The key to a lasting sibling relationship is to boost each other up and spend quality time with one another. Even if it's a midnight Taco Bell run or watching your favorite TV show together, being in the presences of the person who knows exactly what you are going through is special. Don't take siblings for granted, because at the end of the day you are family.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
