Donald Trump is no stranger to the media since he’s been in the spotlight for a long time. He is the president and chairman of The Trump Organization and the founder of Trump Entertainment Resorts. He also owns and lives in the Trump Tower found in New York City, New York. This has led him to a lot of power and responsibility. Unfortunately, he has focused more on the power than the responsibility. In order to gain more power, he decided to run for president and became a 2016 presidential candidate. This has become one of the biggest disasters since he is not fit for the position. His comments and tweets are proof of this.
Citizens look for a leader when voting for president. They want someone who is honest, responsible, intellectual, caring, forceful when necessary and skilled in diplomacy. Not all presidential candidates have these characteristics, but there are various other ones they may have which are also appealing. Donald Trump has none of them. Yes, he went to a good school and has been very successful, but let's remember that there are also people that work for him. They are responsible for making sure certain things get done. They are also the reason for his success, not him alone. He is known for being a bully. His comments usually do not sound intellectual and instead show him as ignorant. Additionally, what skills does he have in the area of politics? He doesn’t even have people skills. His words are famous for being disrespectful, stupid and for putting different people down.
For example:
On African Americans: "I have a great relationship with the blacks. I've always had a great relationship with the blacks," Trump said on Talk 1300 AM radio in Albany, New York in April 2011.
On foreign policy: "China's Communist Party has now publicly praised Obama's reelection. They have never had it so good. Will own America soon." from a May 2013 tweet.
On women: “You know, it doesn’t really matter what [the media] write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass," said Trump in a 1991 interview with Esquire magazine.
On climate change: “It's freezing and snowing in New York--we need global warming!” from a November 2012 tweet.
On his own intelligence: “Sorry losers and haters, but my I.Q. is one of the highest -and you all know it! Please don't feel so stupid or insecure,it's not your fault” from a May 2013 tweet.
Do people really want this type of man for president? These comments alone have proven how inappropriate he would be as president. However, the comment that has most recently been discussed around the world is what he said about Latin Americans. His comment was directed specifically towards Mexico, but it has caused all Latin American countries to turn against him and his run for president. He said, “The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems. When Mexico sends its people, they are not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”
This obviously caused a media frenzy, and it has also affected his corporate life. So far Univision, NBCUniversal and Macy’s have “dumped” Trump for being so racist. Trump decided to sue Univision for $500 million because they have decided to not air the Miss Universe beauty pageant. The network’s response was, “We just reviewed Mr. Trump’s complaint for the first time, and it is both factually false and legally ridiculous. We will not only vigorously defend the case, but will continue to fight against Mr. Trump’s ongoing efforts to run away from the derogatory comments he made on June 16 about Mexican immigrants. Our decision to end our business relationship with Mr. Trump was influenced solely by our responsibility to speak up for the community we serve.” He has also threatened to sue NBC. In terms of the beauty pageant, Mexico has pulled out of the competition and Colombian singer, JBalvin, has refused to perform.
Apart from business matters, many Hispanic celebrities have had many things to say about his comments. These celebrities include Eva Longoria, Maná, Shakira, Ricky Martin, Juanes and more. These celebrities are some of the most influential people in the world with billions of fans. Many of these fans also happen to live in the United States. These stars have thanked networks for dumping Trump, called him out for hatred and ignorance, supported the people who made the decision to pull out of the pageant and more. Maná front man Fher Olvera even denounced Trump in their sold out tour at the Los Angeles Staple Center. Shakira even made a tweet translating, “No one living in this century stand behind so much ignorance.”
On July 5, a week after Trump's comments, he decided to call out Miss Universe, Paulina Vega, for being a hypocrite. She made an Instagram post with the caption, "I find Mr. Trump's comments unjust and hurtful. As a Colombian and as Miss Universe, I want to show my support and validate the sentiments of the Latin community. The Miss Universe Organization works independently from its owners. For the past 64 years, they have created partnerships with great charity groups and have helped thousands of communities. Their legacy of uniting countries around the world has been inspiring to many. If the Miss Universe Organization shared any anti-Latin sentiments or any type of racial biases, I wouldn't be in this position today. I strongly believe that dividing and categorizing humankind only holds it back. Acknowledging and embracing the differences that exist across humanity is the first step in real and substantial development. We must strive together in order to improve the common good."
Trump did not take this post well, which led to his slamming Paulina Vega. He said that she had no right to criticize him while keeping her award. He tweeted, "Miss Universe, Paulina Vega, criticized me for telling the truth about illegal immigration, but then said she would keep the crown-Hypocrite." Vega responded by saying that she would not give up her crown because of the organization's social work in communities around the world.
All of these things, along with millions of Facebook posts and tweets made by Hispanics, have proved just how united the Hispanic community is. According to the United States Census website, there are approximately 54 million Hispanic citizens in the U.S. This number has only increased over time. Does he seriously think he can win an election with these many votes against him? It’s absurd.
Something I personally suggest to Trump is to do his research. Is he aware that the United States has funded wars based on drugs in Colombia and Mexico? They have given power to drug cartels killing thousands of citizens. The United States also has a history of getting involved in “political” intervention in Central America. This has been the main cause of people leaving their countries and moving to places like the United States. Facts are facts, Mr. Trump.
Given that all of this has occurred in just the past two weeks, can the United States really afford this type of man as president? Like I said before, he has proven to be ignorant and full of ridiculous, stupid comments. Every country needs a man or woman who will support the country and have positive diplomatic relationships with other countries. This man is destroying all possibilities of that happening. The day he becomes president will also be the day many countries turn their backs on the United States. I implore all American citizens to see reason. Donald Trump is not the best presidential candidate. Please don’t give him your vote and #DumpTrump.
