My Semi Open Letter To Nicole Arbour

She clearly needs a fact checker, so I have volunteered myself.

My Semi Open Letter To Nicole Arbour
Daily Mail

Five months ago, a Youtuber uploaded a video called "Dear Fat People". This Youtube personality was and is Nicole Arbour. There was outrage all over the interwebs because Arbour was literally targeting a group of people and bullying them. At one point in the video, she makes the statement that if fat people just stopped eating they wouldn't be fat anymore. She makes fun of what she calls a "fat family" that she encounters in an airport and then tells her "sad" story of having to deal with the child's fat encroaching on her seat. Overall, the video was disgusting, poorly written, and poorly edited.

Arbour made waves again this past month when her ex-boyfriend, Matthew Santoro, put out a video claiming that Arbour was emotionally and physically abusive towards him. Honestly, with the multiple videos that are out there with Arbour being emotionally abusive towards people she doesn't even know, it isn't hard to believe that this could happen. She, of course, put out a video denying it, claiming that Santoro made it up and that she couldn't believe he would use his "platform" in such a manner. Because you know telling fat teens they are lazy, smell like lard and are killing themselves is a perfect way to use a platform. Arbour's video has since been deleted, but Santoro's video can be found here.

On February 20, 2016, Arbour decided to put out a sequel video to "Dear Fat People" titled "Dear Fat People 2: The Second Helping". The video was uploaded because of Arbour's outrage regarding the new Barbie design and because of the latest cover of Sports Illustrated, which has plus sized model Ashley Graham on the cover.

Being a fat person, I of course have my own opinions on Arbour, however I have a few facts and questions that I want to share involving this video.

1. Nicole, if there is no such thing as "fat-shaming", how can there be "thin-shaming"? In your first video you claimed fat-shaming was made-up by fat people because they were getting upset about others telling them to workout. So, keeping that in mind, what does thin-shaming do?

2. If the Sports Illustrated model did lose more weight by continuing her workout routine, then hell yeah I would still call her my hero and a great inspiration to others who want to lose weight. She is still a better person than you will ever be because instead of saying that people are lazy and are just stuffing cookies down their throats, she is giving advice and examples on how to fix the situation they are in. She also understands what we are going through. I think you should read this article about trainers gaining weight just to lose it with their clients. Then I dare you to tell me that I just have to stop eating to lose weight.

3. There have been "Dad Bods" on the Men's Health cover - Jimmy Fallon in March 2015 and President Obama in 2008. I know that isn't a lot, but you know there aren't that many plus sized model on magazines covers in general, let alone the Sports Illustrated cover. The idea of only have muscular men on the Men's Health cover is a whole different conversation on the high expectation we have for men's body image in this country though.

4. Graham has publicly come out and said there was no photoshop used on the cover. Why would she tell Access Hollywood this if she was lying? Why would she wreck her career in such a manner?

5. We never said there was something wrong with Barbie, just that having only her one body type was wrong. Other types of Barbies should be out there as well so little girls and boys can see themselves in the toys they play with, which is actually helpful to their mental health. This wasn't an attack on the slim, tall, blonde Barbie, it was an attack on the idea that no other Barbie could exist. You can still get the original Barbie, but now you can also get a variety of races and body types.

6. Not only are you offensive to vegans, you also confused vegans with hipsters, Southerners and those obsessed with Pinterest. Maybe you guys don't have mason jars in Canada, but that's no reason to doubt their awesome powers as cups, plant holders, or organizers. Seriously, mason jars are awesome and don't deserve your hate.

7. If so many people used your first video as "workout motivation" then why do you only show three of them? Where are all of your adoring fans?

Nicole, I get that you are doing this for attention, and I am giving it to you because, honestly, you sicken me and someone needs to tell you that your words hurt people, because, obviously, your parents did a bad job explaining that to you. I know you feel like you need something big to take you out of the hole you put yourself in with your ex, but this is not helping your case or your career. Your trigger warning was ridiculous and I hope that you never, ever, gain a single pound because I think you might regret what you said one day when you finally understand how hard it is to lose weight or just keep it off. I honestly don't think you could last a day in my shoes, or anyone's shoes that are plus sized; especially when there are so many people like you still around.

No, I do not stuff cookies down my throat. No, I do not just sit and complain about people fat shaming me and blaming them for my fatness. No I do not smell like lard. I smell like grease from working at a burger joint so I can pay my phone bill and afford texts books. Am I fat? Yes. Could I lose weight? Yes. Do I have the time or the money at the moment to put in to eating healthy all the time and working out three times a week? No, because I am a senior in college who half the time doesn't even have enough time to sleep between work and school. So I do what I can when I can, which is eating salads every now and then, walking around rather than driving, grabbing an apple rather than a candy bar when I have to miss a meal or drinking water even though I really need a soda to stay awake to write my midterm papers. But thank you, Nicole, for yet another "humorous" and "satire" filled video about why people who don't look like you suck.

Honestly though Nicole, I feel sorry for you. I've dealt with bullies and judgmental people my entire life and that has taught me two things. One is that I do not need to impress any person out there but myself. If i am not happy with who I am, how can I expect another person to love me when I can't? Secondly, bullies target people because they use to be bullied. Who hurt you? Who bullied you into becoming this person? Maybe, instead of hurting others, you fight your own demons like the rest of us instead of projecting your insecurities onto others.

Can't wait for the next video!

Sincerely,

A College Student Who Would Proudly Show You Her Stretchmarks and Cellulite Any Day Of The Week

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
