After cheering for the USA for over two weeks, it’s time for all of us to say “Goodbye” to Rio and “Hello” to Tokyo 2020. We’ve beat everyone in the medal count race, brought up controversy, and have become emotionally invested in our American athletes.
1. The Snapchat medal count filter
You’re lying if you say you haven’t taken a gander at this filter every couple of hours to see our progress in winning the medal race. The first few days the competition was stiff, but as usual, good ol’ Uncle Sam brought us victory once again shattering the competition finishing with a staggering 121 medals. 2012 host and the USA’s old mom Great Britain came in with a sparse 67 medals.
2. Patriotism
Never are stored filled with as much USA apparel, party supplies, and snacks other than the Olympics and the Fourth of July. This national pride unites the West Coast to the East Coast as we watch athletes from all fifty states compete and win. Our undeniable athletic excellence is showcased at the highest level, leaving everyone around the world knowing how dominant Team USA really is.
3. Sports!
Even if you’re not a traditional fan of professional football, baseball, or basketball, the Olympics truly has a sport for everyone to enjoy. Whether you prefer the quick pace of table tennis, the excitement of beach volleyball, or the intensity of rugby, everyone can channel their inner sports fan. Now that the Olympics aren’t occupying your favorite TV channels, it’s time to go back to Netflix!
4. Athletes
After a solid four years of hearing relentless celebrity gossip, it’s a pleasant change of pace to focus on athletic success for once. For the first time since 2012, names like Simone Biles, Usain Bolt, and Katie Ledecky were bigger than names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian, and Hillary Clinton.
5. Excitement
No matter what situation it is, the USA is never caught up in a dull moment. Whether it is on the court where Kerri Walsh and April Ross clinched the bronze medal, or Ryan Lochte out in the night stirring up controversy, the Americans are always sure to get attention.
In four years the USA will be at it again (or two if you’re a winter sports fan) so get ready and book your plane tickets to Tokyo 2020
