The NFL has been widely criticized because safety concerns for the players and the ratings of their games. Richard Sherman, Cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks, who’s one of the more vocal players in the league, spoke his mind again.
On Tuesday, Sherman wrote an essay The Players Tribune talking about why he dislikes Thursday Night Football. Sherman called it a, “Poopfest,” and said, “The whole idea of Thursday Night Football is terrible. It's ludicrous. It’s hypocritical.”
Sherman pointed at the small gap between the football games as the reason why Thursday Night Football games have been so poor and the ratings have been down this season. “We’ve seen blowouts, sloppy play and games that have been almost unwatchable -
And it’s not the player’s fault. Their bodies just aren’t ready to play.” If you look at the Thursday Night Football games, Sherman makes a good point because most of the games were boring games which hurt the ratings. Most of the games were either blowouts or had teams that were irrelevant, with players getting injured.
Week 3
Houston Texans 0-New England Patriots 27
Week 4
Miami Dolphins 7- Cincinatti 22
Week 5
Chicago Bears 10-Green Bay Packers 26
Week 9
Atlanta Falcons 43-Tampa Bay Buccaneers 28
Week 10
Cleveland Browns 7-Baltimore Ravens 28
Sherman also calls the commissioner Rodger Goodell, and the NFL hypocrites based on what they’ve said about player safety. “I just don’t understand why the NFL says it’s taking a stand on player safety, then increases the risks its players face by making them play on Thursday, before their bodies are ready.”
As for the future of Thursday Night Football, Sherman doesn’t see games on Thursday’s going anywhere because of the business side of the sports. “As long as fans are tuning in and advertisers are paying to be featured on Thursday Night Football, it’s not going anywhere.”
What can the NFL do to make games on Thursday better before they move to change them? Perhaps they can put have two teams coming off a bye week to play on Thursday, so the teams are fresh and ready to play. Besides that, there’s not much more that could be done to solve a problem in such a physical sport like Football.
The idea of playing games on Thursday with only three days off is still one of the bigger problems in the NFL. Sherman is just one of many that have problems with it and many more may followers to get rid of Football on Thursdays.
