Imagine you are in a room full of mirrors….
Everywhere you turn are these mirrors that glisten your reflection. The room is empty and you are all alone in it. There is only a soft light that gives the room a glow. Imagine that you are in there for a while and all you can do is look in the mirrors. You watch as it looks like there are dozens of you. It’s an uneasy feeling when you don’t feel alone because there are millions of yourself staring right back at you. What do you feel when you look into your reflection? Are you smiling at your reflection or are you desperately trying to look away from it? Is your reflection giving you comfort or is it screaming hateful words at you?
If your reflection is screaming hateful words at you, then you have a distorted reflection in your head and you're not alone…
Body Image is a struggle a lot of people have whether it’s the weight of their body, facial features or even their hair. Whether they are under or overweight or what facial features they may have, many people have these terrible images of themselves. According to, Psychology Today, body Image is the “Mental representation one creates, but it may not bear close relation to how others actually see you." Their ideas of who they want to be haunt their minds. Instead of seeing the beauty in themselves, they compare themselves to others and begin to hate their own reflection.
Beauty is a strange word because it is used to either compliment or criticize people. Unfortunately, criticism affects people more than compliments. Hateful words never leave a mind just like how bad memories tend to be the ones that stick. Often, the media is the cause of negative body images but also it can be words that are said to them directly. “You should go on a diet” or “do you even eat?”, these are words that add to the hatred a person could have towards themselves. Sometimes, if a person hears something so much they begin to believe it themselves. Negative body images have been a problem for so many years and it hasn’t changed much.
The media is slowly trying to fix the way they portray people by giving more variety. Nobody is the same size or looks the same which is what the media needs to convey as well. The change can also start with you. It can start with you gaining confidence in who you are. It also can start by you watching what you say because you never want to be the reason why someone can’t look in the mirror. It is believing that uniqueness is the most beautiful quality a person can have. Your image is what makes you, you and you are beautiful.
So, I want you to go back to the room of mirrors...
I want you to look at your reflection with a strong mind. I want you to have a stare down with yourself and study your eyes. Even if you aren’t there yet in your confidence I want you to look at your reflection. Let it scream those hateful words at you and become distorted. Instead of looking away, I want you to scream back “you are beautiful”.
