While Alabama may still have questions at the quarterback position, the reign of Derrick Henry has officially continued as Alabama dominated the Wisconsin Badgers Saturday night in Arlington, Texas 35-17.

Since his freshman year, Henry has put on a show for the fans of the Crimson Tide, but now is easily transitioning into his new role as the feature back for Alabama. Henry had 13 carries for 147 yards and three touchdowns including a 4th-and-1 37-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

“Truly I didn’t know it was 4th-and-1,” Henry said. “I didn’t know and I didn’t care. As long as we got the touchdown I was happy.”

Henry wasn’t the only offensive star for the Crimson Tide Saturday night. Former Florida State transfer Jake Coker finally started to preform in Arlington as fans expected out of him last season. Not only was Coker calm, collective and decisive with his passes, he also looked like a well-established quarterback in his first start with the Tide.

“It felt really good out there,” Coker said. “I studied all week and felt very comfortable with the game plan. Coach (Lane) Kiffin, the plays he called, the way he put the game plan together, made it pretty easy on us. Wisconsin’s a really good team, so I think we did our job.”

Coker finished the day 15-21 with 213 yards and a touchdown pass to Robert Foster in the 2nd quarter. His competitor, Cooper Bateman, also saw the field in the 4th quarter and went 7-8 with 51 yards. While Coker hasn’t been named the official starter for the 2014 season, his performance Saturday night put a check by his name in the pro-cons list.

“I told both guys we’re not naming a starter, we’re naming whose going to start the game.” Nick Saban, Alabama's head coach said. “We’re just gonna go on feel. Jake was doing pretty well.”

Derrick Henry might have been the star in the backfield, but Kenyan Drake did play a nice supporting role to his new feature back. After breaking his leg last season during the Ole Miss game, Drake lit up the field of AT&T Stadium with his blazing speed and quick ability to turn up the field for some big yards. The duo of Drake and Henry should be very strong for the 2015 season.

“Anytime you see No. 2 running down the field and there’s a whole bunch of guys chasing him— that’s an awesome feeling.” Center Ryan Kelly said. “You’re not going to arm tackle a guy who’s 235 pounds. Derrick Henry is just going to run right through them.”

Henry, who was considered an upper-middle tier back in the SEC, is now slowly gaining the talk of a Heisman-caliber season. After last year sitting behind now Jacksonville Jaguars running back, TJ Yeldon, Henry has a shot to add his name to the list of stellar Saban running backs including Yeldon, Eddie Lacy, Trent Richardson and former 2009 Heisman Trophy winner, Mark Ingram.

“That’s what we expect out of him,” linebacker Reggie Ragland said. “I practice against him every day, it’s tough.”

Alabama defense was running sound as usual under defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Wisconsin’s new running back Corey Clement, rushed for only 16 total yards due to a left groin injury from earlier in the week. Not only that, but Wisconsin’s rushing attack was held to only 40 total yards throughout the night.

Joel Stave however did look strong for the Badgers, going 26-36 with a two touchdowns and one interception. However, the offensive line did make it hard on Stave as he was sacked three times including two from Alabama defensive end Jonathan Allen. Alabama’s front seven may have been fine, but once again weakness in the secondary led to all 17 points.

The Crimson Tide also came into a bit of luck in the first quarter when Wisconsin’s captain and safety Micheal Caputo was forced to leave the game due to a head injury. While this may not have made a huge difference for Alabama, Capuno did lead the Badgers in defense last season with 106 total tackles.

“It was hard on him, yet it was the clear choice,” Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst said. “Those decisions are pretty easy.”

Alabama will now return to Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa to face Middle Tennessee for their home opener. One thing is certain come next Saturday; fans can’t wait to see what Derrick Henry can do in his own arena.
