Food, family, and fun? What's better?

5 Reasons We Love The Super Bowl

Coming from a girl with three brothers and a sports fanatic of a dad, the Super Bowl is a big day in my household. Actually, considering the fact that the many toilet flushes that occur at once during half time on Super Bowl Sunday have created plumbing problems in US cities, it’s a big deal for any American. Here’s why we all love the Super Bowl and what makes this day so enjoyable.

1. The food.

Let’s get the obvious over with right away. From wings to nachos to pigs-in-a- blanket, or if you eat a specific food every year for the Super Bowl (in my family’s case, chili is tradition), unlimited appetizers is always amazing. And half the fun is making football themed creations and desserts that taste delicious. Raise your hand if you’re only here for the food.

2. That feeling of being part of something.

You know Americans all over the country are watching the Super Bowl just like you. All your friends and family, people 3000 miles away that would otherwise be completely irrelevant, even celebrities. It’s a nice feeling knowing that you’re all taking part in an American tradition together.

3. The commercials.

Yeah, this one’s a biggie. Apparently the cost of a 30 second commercial is about four million dollars. Everybody looks forward to the usual Budweiser, Doritos, Pepsi and even Go-Daddy advertisements that can be funny, eye-opening and heartwarming. It’s often the case that the next day, more people are talking about the commercials than the actual game. So shut up and watch!

4. The half-time show!

If you’re a music lover or not, all eyes are on the TV when the stadium darkens and the performance begins. It’s probably one of the greatest honors in the music industry to perform at the half-time show, because so many are watching (last year a record was set, with 118 million viewers). Hopefully this year, Prince, U2 and Coldplay won’t disappoint!

5. Oh, and the actual football.

Though you may be skeptical, watching the game itself is a lot of fun too, especially if it’s a close one. In case anyone needs a reminder, the Denver Broncos are playing the Carolina Panthers. And I’ll admit that I don’t have much real knowledge of football (aside from watching every season of "Friday Night Lights" about five times), but it’s undeniable that the spirit and excitement of the game is pretty awesome.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
