Reasons to Love October

Fall weather and Halloween? What more could you want?

October has arrived. While no one's excited to give up the sunny days of summer, there are about a million reasons to look forward to this month all year long.

1. It's an excuse to watch your favorite horror films.

With Halloween around the corner and nights getting darker earlier and earlier, scary movies are a great way to pass the time. Of course, Hocus Pocus is one of the great cult classics, and for many, watching it with a bowl of microwave popcorn is a part of ushering in the autumn season. There are so many to choose from though and no one can go wrong with the oldies. Psycho, Halloween, The Birds, etc.

2. Going pumpkin picking with friends and family.

Although Charlie Brown might argue the pumpkin patch can be a scary place, for most, this is one of the standard fall activities marked down on the calendar. You might plan the outing as a backdrop for your next Instagram or just to say you had plans at all. Whether young or old, it’s the best feeling finding the perfect pumpkin, just the right shade of orange and thoroughly checked for damage, knowing full well that you will never actually get around to carving it and if you do, failing miserably.

3. All the amazing food.

Apple cider donuts, pumpkin pie, candy corn, and all the Snickers you desire if you’re willing to do the leg work on the 31st. Forget about maintaining the beach body you spent all of summer sculpting because the stair stepper at the gym won’t make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside like a slice of apple pie.

4. The feeling you get when Halloween finally arrives.

It may not be everyone’s favorite holiday, but it means you’re one step closer to Thanksgiving and Christmas. The agony of finding the cutest and most original costume that will inevitably blow everyone else’s out of the water is over and you get to enjoy a night begging for candy, which we all can admit is so worth it, or dancing the night away at a friend’s party.

5. Watching the leaves change.

Especially for those lucky enough to experience it on a college campus, seeing fall slowly transform the summer weather is almost enough to forget that the temperature’s about to drop and flip flops have to be put into storage. For those of you past those college days, the fall foliage is a pretty good justification for taking the long way home when really your just avoiding all the work you need to catch up on.

6. The delicious seasonal drinks are well worth the wait.

As much as people act like pumpkin spice everything is overrated, there’s a reason the flavor has taken over a majority of the food you consume in October – it tastes awesome. Homemade apple cider and whatever the latest fall-themed Starbucks drink is, isn't half bad either. If liking coffee that tastes like the best season of the year makes me basic, then basic I shall be.

7. Sweater weather

All the more reason to embrace number three. October means bringing out the leggings you just couldn’t find a shirt long enough for in the summer, but that match perfectly with your oversized cardigan. It’s that brief period before you really start to feel the cold of winter weather when you can wear a sweater, and only a sweater. No bulky winter coat needed.

Have a happy October!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
