Some people would call themselves talentless, while others would say they have an area of expertise that is questionably similar to that of an Olympian. If you are like me, you are what some consider to be "talented," but it really boils down to being mediocre at everything. That being said, I give you eight reasons why it sucks being mediocre at everything.
1. People always ask what you're good at.
Like, I could tell you I sing, that I'm artistic, that I write, and I can make a four leaf clover with my tongue, but I'm literally mediocre at all of those things and then some. I have no answer for you, if you want all the mediocre things, we may be here for a while. I really don't know, princess, cut me a break.
2. But when you say you're okay at everything, they always say "but what are you really good at?"
I told you I DON'T KNOW. On a scale from one to ten, I'm a solid five in everything.
3. Family ALWAYS overrates you at events.
I don't know about you, but my dad loves to show me off in the worst way. Like, yes dad, I can do all of those things you told grandma, but not at the caliber you explained. Yes, I can sing but no, I'm not the next Aretha Franklin. I'm more like Franklin the Turtle.
4. You commit to way too much.
It starts off great, but being okay at everything, you end up joining a lot of clubs, groups, etc. The problem is, your calendar starts to basically eat you alive. Then you have to decide what's more beneficial but you can't because it's all the same.
5. People start to expect you to do things just because you can.
Look, I can do what you asked me, but I gotta do me too, boo. If I do my work and help you with yours, someone is going to get the short end of the stick so it is better just to say no. I want to, and it kills me not to help you but...
6. Not only that, but they get mad at you when you say no.
Look, I'm sorry you procrastinated but that doesn't mean to come crawling to me. Yes, I could probably do whatever it is you need, but I need to learn to say no. I want to help you, I really do, but I have neither the time nor motivation, my little kumquat.
7. You want to get lessons in one talent but you're never sure which talent to hone in on.
I want to be really great at something, but I just can't decide which thing. Why is this my life?
8. Filling out the "special skills" area on resumes is a skill in and of itself.
I dread this question not only because I have a lot to say, but reasons one to seven start to happen.
You may, at times have a bit of an identity crisis, but at the end of the day, you're mediocrity is what keeps you and many others going. So be proud of the strangely talented freak you are! You may be a jack of all trades and a master of none but you are you, and you just gotta work it.
