Embracing one's vulnerability can be one of the hardest, most stressful, embarrassing things a person can do to his or herself. Why do we put ourselves in situations that cause us so much agony and anxiety? Are we trying to prove something to ourselves or are we trying to prove something to other people? I believe the answer depends on who is being asked. Nevertheless, putting yourself out there is not something anyone should be afraid of and it will only help you in the long run.
So what actions constitute “putting myself out there"? Again, this depends on whom you are asking. The range is endless and everyone sits somewhere differently on the scale.
As scary as being vulnerable is, these actions will set you free. Running for a position in student government, moving to Los Angeles to begin a career as an actress, coming out to a close friend--these all establish a sense of who you are, but at the same time, who you want to be.
Who do you want to be? Do you want to be the girl that misses out on that opportunity for an internship in New York City because you thought applying would be pointless? Do you want to be that guy who misses out on meeting new people at a party because you are too concerned with trying to play it safe? When you begin to believe in yourself, other people will too. We all have insecurities and if you don't realize this by now, and judge another individual for trying to accomplish a goal, then you need a reality check along with a human decency one.
Putting yourself out there is not an easy task. It is terrifying. It is painful. It is overwhelming. But if we all get on board and realize how hard it is for anyone, we should encourage those around us and support not only our friends, but strangers as well. We need to take a chance. Face the world. Do what we love.
I do not want to live a boring life. Writing for The Odyssey is a step in that direction for me. I put my raw and emotional thoughts down on paper and hope I can influence those around me to do the same, whatever their guilty pleasure may be. We have been told from a young age to dream big. Isn't it time we start listening?
