Growing up, the last word we would ever use to describe our parents was "cool." We didn't really tell them much, we tried to avoid going places with them, and we cringed every time they tried to have conversations with our friends. Don't lie. You know you've at least once said “Um, no we might see someone" when your mom or dad asked if you wanted to go to the movies.
Now that we're older, I find that we really start to appreciate and love everything our parents do for us. And dare I say, we actually start to find them cool. Our freshman year, we all probably got annoyed when our parents called us three times a day just to check in. Personally, being a junior, I find myself calling my parents far more than they call me. I enjoy getting their opinion on things and receiving advice that I can't get from my friends.
For example, we are all in that stage right now where we are trying to figure out what the heck we want to do when we graduate. This has been stressing me out for a while now. I'm slowly starting to realize that I want to move out of Louisiana to pursue my dream as a professional sumo wrestler. Just kidding. But on a real note, I do hope to one day be a writer, and I want to explore that world outside of Louisiana upon graduation. My parents have been very supportive of this dream. I can't tell if it's because they love me and want me to be happy or if they just want to get rid of me. Hopefully it's the first choice.
My point is that you won't find anyone more supportive of your goals and desires than your parents. No matter what, they will always be your biggest fans and believe in you in the times when you don't even believe in yourself. I call my dad pretty much every day, and we discuss ways on making my dream job a reality. He listens, gives advice and further motivates me to make it happen.
Yes, at times we think our parents can be lame. But honestly, we're the lame ones for thinking they are lame in the first place. Anytime throughout your day when you're not busy, give your parents a phone call. They love you, and that simple call will make their entire day. Besides, they wiped your butt as a baby. You owe them.
