Growing up, my family has always told me that being tall would come to my advantage when I got older. My mom would remind me constantly that I should consider myself lucky because “boys will swoon” for tall girls. Funny enough, that hasn’t been happening to me all too much and I would like to blame it on my height (which yes, I know, is not the entire problem). I began to notice how awkwardly tall I was around the sixth grade when I had to look down to talk to half the boys in my class. I wont go as far as to say that being tall is all bad, but sometimes it would be nice not to tower over all my friends. There are numerous times when I have a problem that I blame on my height. Some of these all-too often occurrences include:
Accidentally getting your head cut out of a photo of you and all your friends
Having to lean down to hug people, who are usually on their tip toes to give you a hug back
Not being able to wear heels on date nights unless you want to look like an NBA player
Not being able to wear any sort of heel over 2 inches in general
Being asked, “how’s the weather up there?”
Being asked if you have ever or currently play basketball, because obviously every tall person plays basketball! (Okay, I actually did used to play basketball. So I guess I fall into that stereotype)
Being the go-to girl for reaching anything on the top shelf
Having to slow down your pace when you’re walking to class with friends because two of their steps equals one of yours
Feeling nervous wearing heels to a date night if your date isn’t at least 6 feet tall
Being mistaken for being older than you are (which is not always a problem)
Not being able to wear trendy rompers for fear of having a wedgie
Not being able to wear clothes that accidentally shrink in the dryer because you’ll look like a giant in them
First thing you look at when you order a dress online is the length and model height to make sure it covers your butt
Having an awkward middle school phase because you hadn’t grown into your legs yet
Having to special order jeans that go past your ankles
People assuming that you’re 5 inches taller than you actually are
Actually getting upset when people think you’re taller than you actually are
Having family members tell you growing up that you should be a model purely because of how tall you were
Not being able to borrow any of your friends clothes because they’re too small or too short on you
Not being able to fit into any of your friends’ shoes
Us tall girls will always have the advantage of knowing when it’s raining before you do and being able to get the chocolate that’s hidden on top of the refrigerator. So really, we have problems we face daily but it isn’t so bad all the time, just most of the time.
