Super Bowl 50 is set to be a showstopper during the game and halftime, but what are the key things you need to know before the game on February 7?
Let’s first talk about the stars of the upcoming Super Bowl. This Super Bowl appearance will be Peyton Manning's fourth since 2006. He will also be the first ever quarterback to have gone to the Super Bowl four times with four different head coaches. Peyton Manning versus Cam Newton will be the first Super Bowl in which both starting quarterbacks were drafted number one overall. It will also be the biggest age gap between starting quarterbacks, at 13 years and 48 days. The quarterbacks will be giving a show for the audience alone with the history they will be making, but the rest of the team will be stealing the show at times.
For the Denver Broncos, Manning will have to connect with Owen Daniels and other receivers as well as he did during the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots. For their running game, C.J. Anderson will need to continue his solid performances to break through the Panthers' defense.
As far as defenses go, two of the national football leagues top defenses will collide during this game. The Bronco’s defense proved that they were the best on Sunday against the Patriots, with help from Von Miller and Demarcus Ware. Bronco’s defense was able to sack Tom Brady four times, as well as being able to pressure him enough to make interceptions to lead them to their 20-18 win. In order to beat the Panthers, they will need to bring pressure against Newton and, even with his running skills, they need to make him run out of the pocket and attempt harder plays.
For the Carolina Panthers, Cam Newton will need to continue his show stopping performances if he wants to break through the Bronco’s defense. After the Panther’s weak second half performance against the Seattle Seahawks, Newton and the rest of his offense improved their second half performance against the Arizona Cardinals in their big 49-15 win.
For the Panthers' defense, they will need to apply pressure on Manning, and their premier cornerback Josh Norman will need to shut down whoever he is matched up with. This will help in cutting half the field for Manning and forcing him to make throws that may not be his first choice.
Aside from the game, the halftime performance is sure to be memorable. With Bruno Mars reportedly set to perform with Coldplay and Beyoncé, everyone in attendance and watching the game on TV will be busting a move like Cam Newton and Peyton Manning have done during the season.
One last tip for those wanting to know a fun fact: The NFL will be taking a one year break from using Roman numerals in the Super Bowl logo. Instead of calling it Super Bowl L, it will be called Super Bowl 50. This will be the first time since Super Bowl V that Roman numerals will not be used. The NFL will return to using Roman numerals next year for Super Bowl LI.
