Pain V. Suffering: Dealing With Everyday Anxieties

Sometimes we need to remind ourselves how to look at the bigger picture.

We all go through things in life that we can’t control--things we wish we could change or improve for the better. At the end of the day, life wasn’t made with a rewind or reset button; it only moves forward, and so should you. We make decisions every day that will change the outcome of something. One bad decision today could lead to you making a good one tomorrow.

This week I have chosen to sleep in almost every day and not get up and go to the gym, and because of this, I don’t feel as healthy and strong as I know I can. However, that doesn’t mean that tomorrow I can’t get up and do something about it.

I have to change what I don’t like and work for what I want. Nothing worth having comes easy.

Rather than sitting around and self-loathing about my situation I can actively consider the steps I need to take to make a difference. Why should anyone feel bad for us when our situation could take a turn for the better if we just do something about it?

The pain you feel for something can turn into suffering over it if you let it. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Don’t waste your own time wallowing in self-pity when you can get out of that headspace and make a change.

When you allow yourself to suffer in a mindset or situation that makes you feel this way, stop and think about what options you truly have. Did it already happen? Can you prevent this from happening entirely?

Ask yourself, “What is the worst that can happen?” Sometimes, if you can stop and figure out where you might end up, the outcome doesn’t seem so scary anymore.

Everyone deals with issues whether you realize it or not. How you choose to push through it is what will help you move on and not dwell on something so negative. So are you going to deal with your pain or suffer?

I am not trying to compare everyday issues to the kind of pain that someone with severe anxiety or a mental illness deals with. The incomparable pain of losing a loved one or facing a life-changing situation isn’t simple. So why would the way you deal with it be? That doesn’t mean you can’t make decisions to live a happier and more productive life.

If one day you want to lay around and do nothing, then go for it, but don’t let that feeling stop you from changing your mindset altogether. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, so don’t take your opportunity to better yourself for granted.

In general, we all could use reminders to let the little things go and make the most of the time we have. Is a fight with a friend or family member worth suffering for? With all of the hate in this world and the seemingly continuous tragedies occurring around the corner, can’t we take a moment to stop and be grateful for the love we have in our lives?

It’s not always easy to push past the things that hurt us and cause us the pain we feel, but try to think of the relief you could feel if you could just let go and live your life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
