Dear disgruntled friend,
It's no secret that the past few days have brought riots and protests against President-elect Donald Trump. While the USA fights internally over this unexpected outcome, the world watches us bicker and whine like children. This global village bears full witness to the chants of "not my president", echoing around the world as would-be "saviors" of the common man threaten Trump with their wooden signs and loud voices. Yet, for all their sniveling and self-righteous bravado, the weeks will pass and they will disappear. Streets will no longer be shut down, and they'll be nothing but a memory. But I want you to think about this tone, about the rhetoric they choose to employ. And I only have one question in response.
Seriously, guys?
Our country was founded on a balance of power between branches of government to protect a dictator from emerging. It was set in place to prevent the very thing that you fear so much. Here is what is truly happening: you know Trump could breach the "safety net" provided by the other two branches of government because Obama showed us just how lucrative the Executive Branch truly can be in the last eight years. Either you admit the balance of power sufficiently protects whatever "racial" remarks he makes that offend you so deeply, or you admit to your candidate of choice abusing the office of the President and showing Trump how to follow suit.
I would also like to take this time to thank you for handing away the 2020 Election. Make no mistake, these riots and protests will not soon be forgotten. Nobody will ever fail to remember the childish bullying and violence that disgruntled liberals have chosen to resort to. And when this country is back at the polls deciding, yet again, who will be president, I pray that the images the media is desperately trying to use to take one final stab at Trump are the very pictures burned into our minds when we decide not only the person who will lead our country, but the ethics (or lack thereof) of the platform on which they stand.
Nothing justifies this kind of behavior. Nothing justifies mindless violence under the banner of "justice" or "peace" (in which perhaps lies the greatest irony). Unfortunately, Obama and Clinton have reminded us that silence speaks just as much as words. Their refusal to speak out against the riots is evidence of their pride and their arrogance.
I hope as you read this you share my sentiments. I hope you watch the riots and disorderly mess with the same sadness and repulsion as I do. Make no mistake, I am no fan of Donald Trump. This is not a letter written to drive people to respect him. But on the unfortunate chance you read this letter in anger and other reactionary emotions, it may be time to grow up, and learn how to hear things you may not like.
At the end of the day, we will respect the office, even if we don't respect the man. And we will accept him as our president. You can shout #notmypresident as much as you want if it helps you feel better...but he is.
The election is over. Let it go. Take a deep breath. And tell your friends, your parents, and your children about the illusion of "safe spaces".
And finally, for goodness sakes, teach them how to take a "punch" and stand back up...instead of setting the town on fire in their blind, immature temper tantrum.
