Hello Plush, Leathery Friend,
It might be strange to write a letter to a large piece of furniture, but it’s important to acknowledge the people and things in life that support you. Therefore, this is important. This is relevant.
You, the big leather couch in my college dorm, are one of my favorite places. You reside in the space where people gather and come together to spend time. You are the definition of hospitality. You invite everyone to be in your proximity. You are a place of comfort.
When I don’t feel like trudging through the snow to find lunch in the cafeteria on a rare snow day, you are where I snuggle with a blanket to eat canned soup and nap. When my roommates are asleep and I’m finishing a research paper long after the library has closed, you hold me up while I work. When my afternoon class gets cancelled, I find myself with you watching episodes of "Spongebob." On Monday nights, my roommates crowd around you to criticize the latest episode of "The Bachelor." Thursday nights, when things get a little crazy after a few too many, you’re closer to the ground than our beds are. You're meant for cuddle puddles and social conversations. You're a fixture in what makes friendships work.
You support me in so many ways. When I’ve pulled a near all-nighter studying for a final, you’re the first one I look to as soon as the test is over. You are where I land when I’m up tossing and turning in my bed at night. You’re my three-hour-long Friday afternoon nap after tough, stressful weeks. When I need a moment just to think, you’re my brief escape from the world.
Above all, you don’t just support me, but you support the people I love. You do this for everyone. When family and friends come to visit, you are the one who makes us feel at home. You are where my roommates and I cuddle together when life gets a little too scary and tough. You are what we dance on when we need a spontaneous dance break. You are where we find friends as soon as we walk through the door when we need someone to talk to.
The people you support share deep conversations and all of the latest school gossip with you. We argue and fight because you provide stability when things aren’t going our way. You are where I’ve laughed the hardest and cried the most. You are where some of my favorite memories begin and end. You make the dorm suite I live in a home away from home, just by bringing the people I care for together.
Honestly, I'm writing this because my roommates asked me to when they were being weird one night. This is for them. I'm sentimental and love myself a good metaphor, so I have to sneak this in here. Roommates, you're some of my best friends, and you are "my couch." You're the support I've needed to get me through each week. So, thanks to you for being all of this and more. And, thanks to the college for providing us with such a great couch.
