To my cheerleading days…
I have to admit; I really do miss you. You were such a big part of my childhood, and it is hard for me to believe that I will never be a cheerleader ever again. You hold such a special place in my heart because you brought so much joy and excitement to my life. You were the reason that I met some amazing friends, and you taught me such valuable lessons that I will carry with me throughout my life.
I will never forget my days as a Pop Warner cheerleader. I started when I was in the fourth grade and I ended up falling in love with the sport. I poured my heart into every sideline cheer, every practice, and most importantly…every competition routine. I was always so proud to wear my cheerleading uniform and, of course, a big bow in my hair. I will never forget receiving the “Little Miss Pop Warner Award” after my first year as a cheerleader…I was so proud.
Tumbling was always such a fun part of the sport for me. I remember doing my first back handspring on my trampoline. After that, I was determined to learn as many skills as I could. I would get a rush every time I mastered something new…nothing compared to the feeling.
Cheerleading competitions were definitely the highlight of my experience. The feeling of nervousness and excitement combined would overwhelm my body before I would walk out onto the floor with my team. We were always prepared to “rock the floor”, but the lingering tension would either translate into positive energy and a flawless routine or it would result in some major mistakes. Performing at nationals in Orlando, Florida was always such a fun time. I am so blessed to have been a part of such an amazing Pop Warner program. Without my coaches and teammates, the accomplishments that we made would not have been possible.
I was lucky enough to make the varsity team in high school as a freshman. Continuing my cheerleading career in high school was a great experience. Although we did not compete, I still enjoyed cheering for the football and basketball teams. Being part of the team allowed me to get involved while doing something that I loved.
Watching my old competition videos always makes me sad because those days were the glory days. As I look back on my days as a cheerleader, I know that there were so many things that I learned. Cheerleading taught me the importance of teamwork, dedication, and passion. I always heard the saying that “there is no ‘I’ in team”, but I was able to grasp a better understanding of the quote after the experiences I shared with all of my teammates. I learned that mistakes result in everyone taking the blame and moving on. I learned that determination can go a long way. I learned that cheering on others is the ultimate motivator. Most importantly, I learned that giving it your all is the best decision you will ever make.
Thank you, cheerleading…. thank you so much.
