Ohioan Winter Woes

Oh, the weather outside is frightful

Ohioan Winter Woes
Phobia Wiki

I've lived in Ohio for my entire life - all 23 years of it. For a majority of those years, I’ve spent half of the year complaining about the cold weather and lack of sunshine. This region gets a lot of cloudy, cold, and dreary weather, which is probably why the northeast has a reputation for their crabby behavior (who wouldn't be crabby without some vitamin D?) Here are my top seven cold-weather frustrations as an Ohioan:

1. Freezing rain

When it's warm enough to rain and then the temperature drops, all hell breaks loose. Everything becomes a sheet of ice, including the roads and sidewalks. It's not enough to be vigilant while driving or walking, you have to have the balance of a gymnast to walk and say a lot of prayers as you white-knuckle it on your drive to work.

2. Rear-wheel drive

If your car has rear-wheel drive, practicing handling your car in the snow, ice, and slush is detrimental to your safety and the safety of others. Do yourself a favor and avoid buying a car that is only rear-wheel drive if you live ANYWHERE where it snows.

3. Winter coats and bundling up

If you know me, you know that I'm always warm. One of the most frustrating things for me is putting a coat on to brave the single-digit temperatures outside then getting in my car and sweating to death for the duration of my ride or going into a store that's blasting the heat and nearly overheating.

4. Dry skin and staticky hair

Nothing is more annoying to me than itchy skin and staticky hair from the dry air. Many times, I've considered pulling a 2007 Britney and shaving my head during the winter because I just can't take the static.

5. Showers

Have you ever gotten out of a hot tub at a hotel and jumped into the pool? That's the kind of temperature shock Ohioans get when getting out of the warm shower to dry off.

6. Seasonal depression

During the winter, the clouds block a lot of our vitamin D, and a lot of people in this region suffer from seasonal or worsening depression. I am one of them, and it makes the holidays a lot less fun. Talk to your doctor about taking a vitamin D supplement if you're not feeling like yourself!

7. Boot expenses

Boots are expensive shoes, and it's necessary to own a variety of them for various occasions in Ohio. That adds up. I'd rather buy a plane ticket to the South.

While I've vacationed to other (warmer and more fun) states, I can't bring myself to leave “the heart of it all” for much longer than a week. Where else could I go that I can experience all four seasons… in one week?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
