15 Odyssey Article Ideas

For those of you who don't write for Odyssey, you have no idea how challenging it is to think up a weekly idea to meet my deadline of Saturday at 4pm.

I'm constantly asking friends if they have any ideas. Some of their responses are very creative, so I just might write about them in the near future but I'd thought I'd share them with you too.

If you write for the Odyssey, perhaps one of these ideas will be the inspiration for your next article. I'm glad that I, and the people in my life, could help.

1. "Write about your roommates, and which of us do you like better— me or Jessan." -Sean R.

Sure, Sean, I'll write about you, and in it, I'll apologize for coming back to the dorm at 4 a.m. after working my late night hall attending shift. I'm jealous that you sleep hours before me. I can't compare you and Jessan. You're both great!

2. "Did you know you could send an engraved potato to someone? Send me one & write about it." -Alan M.

Can you really send someone an engraved potato? That's hysterical. I'll probably send one to my brother for the holidays.

If you're like me, and you didn't know you could send someone a potato, you should check out this link: https://potatoparcel.com/

3. "Write about different flavors of coffee and which to drink during each season" -Kaitlyn R.

I do like this one, and I'll probably write about it soon. In case you were interested, for Fall, you could never go wrong with Apple Cider or a Pumpkin Spice Latte.

4. "Write about your father and how he's in the military, and how him doing tours in various parts of the world has affected your life" -Amado A.

Yes, Dad, I'll write an article about you and the things that have occurred while you were doing your tours in various places of the world. It's definitely strengthened the bond between all of us as a family.

5."Write about being from Queens, the places you've grown up—Astoria, Flushing, the different food places to eat, etc." -Michael H.

This is definitely a great idea. There's lots of food places around Astoria that I've enjoyed. (Artichoke Basille's Pizza, Rizzo's Pizza, Porto Bello, Ponticello's Restaurant etc.). Perhaps the next time I'm back there, I'll write about them.

6. "Write about being an English major and your thoughts and experiences with that" -Joey M.

Yes, Joey, I'll write about being an English major—analyzing and interpreting literature and writing creatively, or having writer's block.

I actually wrote a piece about being an English major a few weeks ago. You can read it here: https://www.theodysseyonline.com/things-you-should-know-for-when-you-see-us-around

7. "Write about being the only one in our friend group who dorms on campus." -Nicholas D.

Yes, I'll write about all of you at some point. I'll write how you all lived on campus with me last year and you all left me this year to commute from your town, and how you all wish you lived on campus since your life would be easier. It's okay that you all left me on campus though -- you have cars now, so you drive me places. We have a great friendship.

8. "Write about being a hall attendant on campus." -Will M.

I actually have an article on this topic in my drafts. I'm waiting on a specific time to officially publish this article.
You can definitely relate to being a hall attendant like me -- you're up all hours of the night, we drink coffee while everyone stares at us like it's ridiculous that we're having another cup at 9pm at night. You understand me, and I appreciate that.

9. "Write about friendships from high school or before." -Raad A.

You're that one friend who may not talk to me all the time, but I've always enjoyed all conversations whenever we do get the chance to talk. If we get the opportunity to hangout and see each other, well that's always great! It's amazing that we've been friends since third grade, and despite not talking all the time, we're still great friends! Both of us have been though a lot and we're both there for each other. I'm sure there's an article about you in the near future.

10. "Write about your involvement at Adelphi." -Sarah C.

Sure, I'll write about the clubs and the groups I'm a part of at some point. I'll be sure to include the countless numbers of hours that I spend sitting or napping in a booth in the Underground Cafe. What are we going to do when they start to re-construct it in two weeks in the beginning of November? Where are we going to take our naps and procrastinate. We need help.

11. "Write about something you're interested in, such as your interest in Genealogy." -Diana L.

Being that I've been completing my family's family tree for several years now, that is definitely something that I would write about in the future. Where to begin with that particular article is troublesome to me, but I'm sure I'll draft it sometime in the near future.

12. "Write about politics because the world's already divided and we'll be voting in a few weeks." -Caterina R.

Talking about politics is something I choose to not partake in. Who I'm voting for is my business. Each candidate has their own stance on several topics. You're entitled to vote for whichever candidate you'd prefer. I'm not going to judge you based on the candidate that you prefer, because it's your choice.

13. "Write about your favorite staff member at Adelphi." -Jason B.

Other than the baristas in the Underground Cafe who make amazing coffee, shout out to Tonya, Norma, and Beatriz (I'll probably give them their own article, too), one of Adelphi's best staff members is Bianca. If you don't know who she is, she's the "Melt Shoppe Lady." The "Panther Melts" on Adelphi's campus was previously called the "Melt Shoppe." Go ahead and start a conversation with Bianca about all of the pets she has, the pets she's rescued, and you'll see how much she cares about animals. You'll also learn to that Bianca cares about the students on Adelphi's campus as well.

14. "Write more about yourself." -Justin D.

I try to write articles based off of my own experiences. I believe that you learn something from all of the experiences that you go through in your life.

15. "Write about our love for Grey's" -Meera M.

For those that know me, I enjoy watching "Grey's Anatomy." You can bring the popcorn and I'll order something off of the Domino's menu for us. I don't watch Grey's every Thursday because I'm usually sitting in the Hall Attendant Booth every time it's on. I do like to watch it on the weekend—if you're around. Feel free to join me, we'll have a Grey's celebration.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
