To My Dearest Old Roomie,
As our first year of college comes to a close, one that we started together, there are a few moments that I would like to reflect on that we've shared together. Almost a year ago we met on Facebook and our fate was sealed in good old shoebox number 207. We've laughed (at everything) and we've cried (over "Grey's"), and we had some fantastic moments that I will forever cherish. Even though we aren't roommates anymore and we no longer go to the same school, I will always consider you to be the one who taught we everything about living with another person. Here are five of my most favorite moments with you.
1. Move-in day
It was hot, sweaty and crowded. Props to us (and our parents) for putting together our room in about three hours. We crammed in everything we could, and I would say half of it was never used (at least by me). Too bad my tapestry never stayed up, and the Amazon Fire Stick never worked, and we couldn't figure out the television for at least two months. The mirror constantly fell off the wall, the air conditioner didn't particularly cool anything down and the heat worked too well. We slept with the windows open in December and the floor was never clean enough. However, despite the fact that the circumstances were never quite conventional, we got through it.
2. The moment we both discovered our mutual love for Justin Bieber
I remember it was a week into school and I was straightening my hair. The room was humid and the first football game was later that night. I don't recall whether a song of his started playing or if it was something else, but when we discovered that we both loved the Biebs, that was it for the rest of the dorm's ears. We sang "What Do You Mean?" at the top of our lungs and literally screamed when he was on stage at the American Music Awards.
When "Purpose" came out on the same day as One Direction's "Made in the A.M.," we clashed a little. But it was only a matter or minutes before we were belting out "Sorry" and "Love Yourself" again, annoying everyone around us and getting smack-talked about on the Yak.
3. Our Cheesecake Factory/Target/mall dates
We both quickly ran out of dining dollars (oops?), and at one point had to choose between the main dining hall or the mall to eat. Cheesecake Factory and Panera were our prime go-to's, and I look back now and laugh at the times when you would yell at me for agonizing over a sweet of some kind. "Just get the cookie, Olivia" must have been a phrase you said about 100 times. Then there was the problem of going to Target and having to carry the cases of water through the mall, onto the shuttle and back to our dorm (neither of us ever wanted to be the one to have to get the key out).
Good times, good times.
4. When we realized it was 2 a.m.
A lot of nights, we would both decide to kind of chill out and try to get to sleep by 12:30 a.m. Of course, like everyone else in this generation, we have to scroll through social media first. There were nights where we would be reading each other articles about Connecticut and New Jersey and anything else that we thought was interesting or funny, and then we'd realize it was 2 a.m. We'd have five hours until the alarm for our 8 a.m. class buzzed, but we couldn't stop talking about the city versus the woods or cats versus dogs. What time is it? It's always 2 a.m here in room 207.
5. Snapchat stories
I was never good at this, but you always got me on your Snapchat story doing something embarrassing or weird. Whether it was an ugly face, an awkward dance move or just generally being my dorky self. There was the night I danced to "Feelin' Myself" and it was the bulk of your Snapchat story, as well as me jammin' to the theme song of "Roswell." Some of my gems include your talking about your love for Max, singing "Mary Did You Know?" and screaming because I put my foot on you. I love looking through my saved ones, although I think I should probably warn the world about how sly you are.
Well, there you have it. I couldn't mention the nicknames you've bestowed upon me or call you any of the things we normally call each other without getting in trouble. Also, it was seriously difficult to think of stories that didn't have massive amounts of profanity in them (we were/are classy). I miss you a lot, and I just wanted to say thanks for being the best first roomie I could have asked for. You made me love cats (well, Max), you're personally responsible for my caffeine addiction and are also the reason why I sometimes speak in the third person (I have to stop myself).
Alright, well, I'm going to go text you now.
And I just have one more thing to say:
"Literally Kim, you're being so rude."
Sincerely,
The Roommate Who Liked Hugging (and always will)
