This summer has been crazy for any NBA fan as some of the league’s biggest names leave their homegrounds for new teams and teammates. Out of the many trades that have happened, here are the teams that have made the biggest changes thus far and why they are so significant.
1. Chicago Bulls
You likely live under a rock if you live anywhere in Illinois and have not heard about the Bulls’ latest acquisitions. As of June 6, the Chicago Bulls have officially kicked out their golden boys, Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah, and gained two major names in the game, Rajon Rondo and Dwyane Wade. The Bulls will still have Jimmy Butler and Doug McDermott (who is willing to give us his #3 jersey for Wade).
After countless injuries from Rose, many fans believe this trade is long overdue. Since the 2013-2014 season, Rose has played in only 40 percent of the games for the Bulls while still maintaining a salary of over $20 million each year. Yet, for other fans this trade was a difficult one as Rose was the Bulls’ first hope in years of actually having a great team and winning a title. Rose was named the league's youngest Most Valuable Player in 2011 and has since then held a special place in the hearts of Chicagoans. Trading Rose was tough on the hearts of basketball fans but is best for the future of the Bulls.
Since the Bulls got rid of Rose as their main point guard it makes sense to grab Rondo (who averaged 12 assists per game this past season) to replace him. Yet, was acquiring Wade the right move? Wade has been known to have knee problems and it is questionable how many good seasons he has left in him. This upcoming season will be one to watch for the Chicago Bulls.
2. New York Knicks
The Knicks have likely made the biggest changes to their roster for the coming season. They may just be fierce contenders for the ring in 2017. The Knicks kept Carmelo Anthony but managed to grab both Rose and Joakim Noah from the Bulls in a five-player trade that will also cost the Bulls a second-round pick in 2017.
Carmelo has been, for the most part, a one-man show on the Knicks. He needs to have players beside him, specifically a point guard and solid post, in order to have a successful team and make it far in the post-season. This is where the need for Rose and Noah come in. The two have played together for years and play the positions that the Knicks needed filled. Yet, was it smart to invest in a point guard who may not play in even half the games this upcoming season? Noah has been a consistent player with amazing defensive skills but Rose may cause some worry for Knicks fans this season.
3. Golden State Warriors
Kevin Durant, in dramatic fashion, made the decision to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder where he saw much success, but somehow never won a championship. In hopes of finally getting a ring, Durant recently decided to take his talents to the Warriors where he will be playing with the Super Splash Brothers (Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson). Curry was named the 2015-2016 Most Valuable Player in the NBA.
Everyone watched the Warriors flop in this year’s finals as they somehow let the Cavaliers come back from three losses to win everything. The Warriors made history by having the most regular-season wins ever in the NBA (73 wins) and it seemed like they were unstoppable. This was until the playoffs came around. It is unclear what went wrong or if something was missing from their team, but Kevin Durant may just be the answer to the franchise’s troubles.
The 2016-2017 NBA season will be one to watch as some of the least expected trades have been made. If I were to make any bets, I would put my money on the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors being in the finals again, but I think the Warriors may just win it all this time around. The Knicks might rise to be one of the top seeds, but I don’t think much should be expected from the Bulls. Yet, you never know how teams will play until the season actually begins so you can bet NBA fans across the globe are counting down the days until tip off this fall.
