The sky is blue, water is wet, and the San Antonio Spurs are once again the least talked about team in the NBA.
The San Antonio Spurs are 29-6 this season (the second best record in the NBA) but that’s also the second best record in their own conference behind the Golden State Warriors. The Spurs are also still undefeated on their home court.
I’ve personally heard more this season about the lowly Philadelphia 76ers and their three-win season than the Spurs.
San Antonio is averaging league-best 89 opponents points per game (courtesy of ESPN). The Spurs are also averaging a league-best plus/minus of 13.6 (courtesy of NBA.com). The Spurs aren’t just winning games; they’re winning games big.
Why don’t people every talk about the San Antonio Spurs? Granted this season the Warriors deserve all the praise, what they did to start this season was incredible and they’re still on a great run with their 31-2 record but the Spurs have been just as impressive.
The San Antonio Spurs aren’t the youngest team in the NBA; in fact, they’re the oldest, yet they just keep winning. Whenever you think the Spurs reign as a top team in the NBA is over they shock the world and have a season like they’re currently having.
The Spurs aren’t even playing at their best. Scouts around the league are saying that the Spurs big free agent signing from this offseason, Lamarcus Aldridge, is still getting acclimated to his new team.
Tim Duncan, the teams’ unquestioned leader since he came into the league in 1997 has only played in 29 of the teams 37 games. The teams’ best player, Kawhi Leonard has also missed four games this season but he is on his way to being one of the best two-way players in basketball.
The Spurs success always comes back to head coach Gregg Popovich. Popovich has been the team's head coach since 1996 and his considered by most to be the best coach in the NBA. Other than his first season the team has never had a winning percentage less than 60 percent. As long as Pop is coaching the Spurs they will continue to be a top team in basketball.
Popovich preaches team basketball and that’s exactly how the Spurs have been playing for 20 years. Yes, they still had hall of famers and future hall of famers on their roster but it is still always about the team. Any given game any player can lead the team in scoring. Watching this team play basketball is a thing of beauty. The way they move the ball and play basketball the way it should be played. So many teams in the NBA today play isolation basketball but not the Spurs. The ball is always moving and the Spurs seem to always get a good shot off every possession.
The Warriors have been the best team in basketball this season, no question about it. However, when it comes to the postseason, be careful betting against the Spurs. This team has the playoff experience, two years removed from their last championship, and the best coach in basketball. Come June the Spurs will be right there going for their sixth championship and second in three years.
