The Golden State Warriors used to be bad. Really bad. From 1997 to 2006, their win percentage never broke .500. One hopeful year of “We Believe“ was followed by five more seasons that ended when the regular season did.
I used to go to games just to eat the ice cream. Now, I’m watching games until 1:30 a.m. on the East Coast to watch the Warriors do not only what no other team has done, but what few, if any, expected them to do: follow their championship with the best regular season of all time, finishing with a record of 73-9. In honor of 73 wins, here are 73 reasons to love the Warriors.
- Let’s start out with how this team isn’t just a couple of stars. Everyone, from the entire team to the coaching staff, from the front office to the fan base, contributes to the effort and chemistry that makes this team so amazing.
- They started out this season with a record breaking 24 wins in a row.
- They are CLUTCH--20 points down? No problem. Check out this one against the Pelicans last year during the first round of the playoffs.
- Roaracle. It’s so loud other coaches have complained. You leave games with your ears ringing. It’s an experience like no other.
- The loyal fan base. Fans have stuck with the team through the many years--bad and good.
- Owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber. They turned this team around and made all the right calls to help bring this team to success.
- BAY AREA.
- The Bay’s E-40 is a huge fan and put out a remix to his hit "Choices."
- G-Eazy, also from the Bay, is a fan and has a Warriors remix to his song "Random."
- Drake loves the Warriors too. Sure, Drake jumps from team to team, but he did give Steph a shoutout in his hit "0 to 100:"
"Steph Curry with the shot... Chef curry with the pot boii." - Their throwback jerseys are pretty sweet. You know what--so are their normal jerseys. And their slate jerseys.
- Stephen Curry is the reigning MVP.
- He’s also an all-star.
- So is Klay Thompson.
- And Draymond Green.
- Oh, and the 2015 Finals MVP--that was a different guy, Andre Iguodala (who has also been an all-star before).
- Fun fact: Iguodala took an internship with Merrill Lynch during the lockout in 2011! Responsible dude.
- Harrison Barnes also interned with Facebook in 2014.
- In 2014, Steph and Klay were part of the U.S. Team that took home the Gold in the World Basketball Championships.
- Of the 30 finalists for the 2016 Olympic basketball team, the Warriors have five (Curry, Thompson, Barnes, Iggy, and Green).
- This Warriors-themed "Game of Thrones" video.
- Klay is a huge "Harry Potter" fan. He, along with Harrison Barnes and Leandro Barbosa, went to Harry Potter World on their day off in Orlando!
- Barnes is also a big "Breaking Bad" fan.
- Steph is really good at making layups! Check it out--oh wait, those are threes, sorry. Yeah, he made 77 threes in a row.
- Steph has a knack for making really long threes like this incredible game-winner against Oklahoma City in February.
- He doesn’t even need to watch the ball go in to know it’s good.
- He also casually makes half court shots.
- A lot of them.
- And shots from... the other team’s three point line?
- He’s got some pretty sweet celebrations for these shots.
- Steph holds the 1, 2, 4, and 7 spot for most threes made in a single season.
- He recently surpassed the barrier of 400 threes last week, finishing with 402 threes made this season. NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER EVEN MADE 300.
- And it was on Matt Barnes. Good try, Matt. Even one of his kids likes Curry better. Ouch.
- Steph didn’t even win this year’s three point contest. Teammate Klay Thompson did!
- It’s okay, though, because Curry took that title last year.
- Other than Steph, Klay has made more threes than anybody else in a single season, snagging the third spot overall for most threes made in a season.
- He had a record-setting 37 point quarter.
- Steph and Ayesha.
- Riley Curry’s podium appearances.
- Honestly, the whole freaking Curry family. They cheer Steph on at games, but if Seth Curry is playing, it’s a house divided. (Confession: my friend and I have tried to spot them at Warriors-Kings games by seeing who cheers when Seth scores)
- Steph’s also really good at golf. So are Kerr and Iguodala. Kerr took them to play at Augusta National, where the Masters Tournament is held every year.
- Jim Barnett’s commentary. Barnett has been the Warriors TV analyst for 31 years.
- Ros Gold-Onwude, the team’s sideline reporter, who is also a baller and played basketball at Stanford.
- Steve Kerr is just a winner--not only is he a part of this record-setting team, but he’s part of the 72-win Bulls team.
- The dude also comes up with some pretty sweet out of bounds plays.
- Luke Walton stepped up big when Kerr couldn’t coach, going from assistant coach to head assistant coach to interim head coach in a very short period of time.
- Everyone still has a lot of love for many past Warriors players, such as David Lee and Monta Ellis, who receive warm welcomes when their teams visit Oracle.
- Many past players also work with the Warriors organization and cover Warriors games, such as Kelenna Azubuike and Adonal Foyle
- The team has a group chat (I wonder what it's called) that brings them together and keeps them laughing.
- That dance they do during intros before every game.
- This video to them singing to "CoCo."
- And this one of them singing to "Big Rings" when they received their championship rings.
- Also Iggy’s travel dance.
- They’ve gotten a shoutout or two from the POTUS.
- And their visit to the White House showed everyone how nicely they clean up.
- Even dogs love the warriors.
- Klay’s love for his dog Rocco. Check out this huge bobblehead of the two of them.
- Draymond Greens’s passion.
- Draymond’s gigantic muscles.
- He also is really funny on Snapchat, so I highly recommend friending him @money23green.
- Bogut’s accent.
- Mo' buckets!
- James Michael McAdoo won both the D-League and NBA title in 2015.
- Brandon Rush’s comeback from injury.
- Shaun Livingston also made a comeback from a gruesome knee injury.
- Barnes’s dunks.
- The whole team is just so darn likeable!
- Steph miraculously hitting a water cup out of Draymond’s hand with a behind-the-shoulder towel pass.
- Andre pranked Festus Ezeli by saying the Warriors had cut him.
- When Leandro Barbosa predicted the future last year when he said: “we gonna be championship.”
- And that’s exactly what they did--they won the 2015 NBA Championship.
- Then they roasted the haters who said their championship was lucky and proved it when they came out even better this season.
- No more words needed here.
It's playoff time. Go Warriors!
